Linux vs Unix
« on: December 16, 2011, 05:44:47 AM »
Hello,

I have often seen written: Linux is having a kernel like Unix.

Does it mean that it is just like but different than Unix? Is Unix also like Linux?

Thanks.

UNIX is a trademark. Before you can use it your operating system must comply with some recent version of the Single UNIX Specification and it must be registered as a Unix system. (On the other hand, it doesn't have to be based on any of the original Unices.)

Linux is probably more Unix standard compliant than some systems sold under the trademarked name, but it has never been registered as a Unix system -- possibly because registering it would cost money that open source developers could find better use for, and more probably because no Linux distro needs that registration anymore.

Oh I see, thanks Bald Brick, but the points you mentioned I didn't see at the links previously seen, nice to know.

tripplestar, the true answer to your question involves "way" more than can be discussed here.

Perhaps if you narrow down the question it can be more specifically addressed.

Does it mean that it is just like but different than Unix? Is Unix also like Linux?

The answer to both of these questions is "Yes".

I suspect however, that you are after more info than that.  :D ;D ;D

Okay thanks many links, I really could read all those but one thing is sure that at least PCLOS is better than Unix, more typical I guess so. Rudge, when you edited the question, it became the question which actually I was to ask, well, I was confused between 'Unix' and 'Unix like', so the......
