Issues with my HP netbook since installing PCLinuxOS
« on: November 15, 2011, 12:05:40 PM »
Issues with my HP netbook model: G60-445 DX Notebook PC.

1) I'm getting a couple error messages on startup from the harddrive.

This is one of them:

pci_root PNP0A08:00: address space collision: host bridge window [mem 0x000cc000-0x000cffff] conflicts with Video ROM [mem 0x000c0000-0x000cd7ff]
I found this one in a topic about Toshiba laptops.  I am sure it is the same as the one I am seeing.

The other one also concerns video ROM, and I think mentions something about the kernel.  It goes by so fast, it is hard to record it all.

I've read something about this problem being fixed (on a Toshiba) by changing the standard kernel for a new one.  But I would need explicit instructions to be able to do that.

Can anyone direct me as to how to solve this problem?

2) My laptop overheats and then shuts down sometimes when I play videos or play games with lots of images.  I think I read that the guy with the Toshiba also solved this issue by changing the kernel, so this may not actually be a separate issue.
But the other possible solution is to buy a cooler pad...but I always got by without that before I switched to Linux.

I am really quite new to Linux, and, while I have used computers for many years, I have never dealt before with Operating Systems or kernels.

Thank you for any help you can give.

I just found some AMD related items in Synaptic.  Maybe it is as simple as that.

You can see the whole log about startup by opening a terminal console and using the command: dmesg
Possibly post the whole output on pastebin.com and post a link here, so that it's possible to watch about all available info.

Which PCLinuxOS flavour do you have installed ? KDE 2011-09 ? what ?
Which CPU is in your notebook ? (or post a link to NB specs ...). It is this one ?

When you mention some solution (like the one for the Toshiba NB) possibly post a link to the source info  ;)

Have you checked the manufacturer's website for a BIOS upgrade
for thermal control ?   Frequently there is, my netbook included.

Gkrellm in Synaptic has an easy way to tell the temperature, if that's
the problem.   The invisible theme for gkrellm gives a good visual
presentation.    The temperature should never go above 148 F
before the fan cools it off.

Post back with the temperature then.
