Okay I installed Pulse Audio. I can now get File> Volume Control to open. The choices are mic 1 and mic 2. Tried both and nothing. It shows one input available and that is checked.
Here is my list for Pulse but I don't know what it means.

That was only a check to see if you had correct ownership of the files .... because at the time you were getting a misconfig error. You no longer get that error, so this is OK.
Check the profile on the Hardware Tab to ensure that Duplex is selected ...... meaning allowing input as well as output.
That should enable both MIC inputs, so selecting the correct one on the Input tab (with the device ticked for Sound Input) should allow you to adjust the level so that your voice registers on the MIC.
