Launch Volume control from the File menu .
Volume control never launches. I get:
Quote
Waiting for sound system to respond
and it does nothing.

It seems you have a misconfiguration .......  that error, IIRC, is related to a misconfiguration of PulseAudio.

I wonder if the ownership of the files is correct .....   try this in a terminal ....  all the responses should show you the owner ......

ls -l $HOME/.pulse

I get something like this .....

Quote
ls -l $HOME/.pulse

Open mixer after clicking volume icon
Settings>Configure channels
Drag "Input Source" from "Available Channels" window to "Visible Channels" window. Apply/OK

Input Source should now be available in mixer window.

Edit:
I believe I also dragged over F-R Mic as well as Line to the visible window in mixer settings.
Thanks but didn't help.

that error, IIRC, is related to a misconfiguration of PulseAudio.
I don't have pulse audio installed but the mic was initially working without pulse audio and as I said before the last time I had the problem installing pulse didn't help. I'll try it though and let you know what happens.

Okay I installed Pulse Audio.  I can now get File> Volume Control to open. The choices are mic 1 and mic  2. Tried both and nothing. It shows one input available and that is checked.

Here is my list for Pulse but I don't know what it means.

That was only a check to see if you had correct ownership of the files ....  because at the time you were getting a misconfig error. You no longer get that error, so this is OK.

Check the profile on the Hardware Tab to ensure that Duplex is selected ......  meaning allowing input as well as output.
That should enable both MIC inputs, so selecting the correct one on the Input tab (with the device ticked for Sound Input) should allow you to adjust the level so that your voice registers on the MIC.

Hope that helps.

If not then a few pics of those tabs might help us understand what you see.

Problem is fixed. And once again as has always been the case it was fixed by magic. I had to reboot due to Synaptic not opening and low and behold I had feed back between my speakers and the mic that was too close. I have rebooted three or four times since this started and it never fixed it. Why it did this time is beyond me.

Glad it is working   ;D     .....  and intermittent problems like that I am always inclined to look to hardware connections first ... loose or bad connection somewhere ...  ;)
