[ Solved ] Avidemux in LXDE suddenly stopped working
« on: December 12, 2011, 02:04:30 AM »
In another thread I have been working trying to come to understand my newly purchased Iomega NAS box, partially bought to handle Movie shuffling on the network.  I started using Avidemux and after a refresher I got the hang of removing sections of a file.

It was a bit accidental that I landed in LXDE, where I had installed KiCAD electronics pcb program for some testing, this was a pristine install very few extra programs added from the ISO install and fully updated.  Since I was in LXDE I added Avidemux and it ran fine yesterday.

Today nothing happens when select from PC Menu. Then I tried to start from konsole,

wedgetail,
Why are you using root? You aren't logging into the root account, are you? :o

No I am not logged in as root.  I realised when I posted that I did the startup attempt as su.

I struggled to figure out the run command for Avidemux in konsole, then I went su did an updatedb and locate avidemux and from the result here I guessed that I needed the avidemux2-gtk.

The story is a little bit more complicated than originally posted:

A little thing that also happened when I started LXDE today was Opera requesting I agree to the License, the ask that normally happens when Opera is freshly installed. (I just can't do without Opera, so that is another install, Opera always going in early when running in a new system KiCAD, Opera, AvideMux and FileZilla).

Before trying to run AvideMux, I had used FilZilla to connect to my NAS box and copy a 5.7GB video file to the "Movies" directory, forgetting I am running LXDE in my testing size partition of about 10-15GB, this is normally fine for testing but since I have started to be a bit more interested Movies and Video a few big files soon bust the boundary.  This happened here, Filezilla terminated midway in the file I was transferring.

I realised that I had hit the limit, copied the offending section to another partition and removed the section to free up space. All went fine and LXDE kept running but for Avidemux would not start.

Thinking about it I also decided to re-boot to KDE-Mini and do a e2fsck -f on the LXDE partition, could not hurt, the result did not show any problems.

When I considered re-installing AvideMux, this reminded me that the LXDE Repo List for some reason does not have the Australian "aarnet" mirror, which I have taken to use.  I was using "heanet" in Ireland, does not really make sense for me as I am in Australia.

So I decided "tweak" sources list for LXDE by adding the "aarnet" (just copied the line from KDE-Mini) and after reloading I have re-installed AvideMux.

AvideMux is back running again, I will spare the post the result I get when starting in Konsole, most impressive size (since it works I have not studied the content but I have a copy).

I am assuming that most likely the odd circumstances I found myself in today had to do with hitting the partition limit and something srrewed up, but it is a guess on my part.

I will consider the problem solved, and mark the topic as such.   ;D ;D

It sounds more like you filled up your partition than corrupted your filesystem. Run the command df to see how much space you have used/have remaining. If you are anywhere near 80% full on that partition, you won't want to add anything large to it.

Likely the opera license request was due to the update from 11.5 to 11.6.
When using LXDE, have you considered using lxterminal? Konsole is fine for KDE, but adding it to LXDE brings in a lot of dependencies.
Alternatively, you could add task-lxde to your KDE install.

I would have more than 80% based on that after having removed the original "Movies" df now shows 67%

Code: [Select]
[gert@localhost ~]$ df /dev/sda8
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda8              23G   15G  7.4G  67% /
[gert@localhost ~]$

The partition is actually bigger than I thought.  I have problems remembering properly as my systems have grown so I generally have about 40 plus partitions (from the days and times when I really experimented).  From the size of the used part I must have left some video files, better go looking.

Code: [Select]
12G /home/gert/Movies

Oooops, this is the original, unedited 4 Video files,  looks like I have better do I rethink of how I want to handle video files.  My recording often average about 4 MB mpg files that then need superfluous adds cut out.

About the Licence request, I was aware of the 11.60 was out and I had checked, which is fairly simple for me as the email agent layout has changed and I was still struggling with accepting the change. So the first thing I checked was the email.

Sorry about the terminal, I confused this with the shape of the icon, to me this was "konsole" despite the fact  it says LXTerminal. The icon could do with a big fat lightning bolt to give differentiation.  :D

The finer details generally escapes me until I run in to problems.  (frequently  ;D ;D)

On working with your video files, there are alternatives to having them in /home/gert/Movies. You can keep them on a dedicated movie partition and mount it to work with them.

Came across this topic and thought I had left it hanging a bit in the air, so I am adding a bit.   :)

I agree, since this video work is very new to me, been putting it off for a very long time. Got catapulted into this a bit with my NAS box. Must admit I then dropped files where there seemed to be room and a bit of logic.

Dedicated partitions looks very attractive when you start adding up the MB's and If I can get my NAS reliable this would the a good place.  One thing that bothers me is that I can not make it spin down consistently. As it is a home unit I don't like the idea of it spinning flat out all the time at least 12 hours plus per day.

Hmm...... that question should be asked in Hardware. I've never had the problem so have no advice to give on it.
