LXDE, and "task-lxde"
« on: December 07, 2011, 07:03:46 AM »
I have LXDE installed as "task-lxde".
I installed PCLinuxOS KDE MiniMe 2011.6., then "task-lxde".

I'm wondering is LXDE therefore like a shell which goes over the KDE Install, when I login to it ? ( Just a guess)

I realise they both can share programmes, KDE, and LXDE; but bit confused as to difference between a 'Install' of PCLinuxOS LXDE, and "task-lxde".

I really didn't understand when first installing that PCLinuxOS KDE MiniMe 2011.6 was like a Primary System ? Just trying to understand exactly.
Have another Computer out of the blue, thinking now to have the two on seperate box's.

Thanks.

It's my understanding they sit "side-by-side" and are both unique desktop environments, (ie. lxde isn't a shell sitting on top of KDE) but I'm sure Neal or someone else can correct that and/or explain in a bit more detail for you francis

francis,
A "shell" on kde? LOL No. Not at all.
Both KDE and LXDE are desktop environments. Apps for one can be used in the other, but this is due to the menu and not one sitting on the other. ;D

When you install a task package (meta package) for a second desktop environment, you add that desktop environment to your login sessions; i.e. you can choose it from your sessions menu at the login screen and log into that desktop environment. This will get you into a completely separate GUI/DE.

Desktop Environment:

Shell:

As for installing to 2 separate computers, you may choose to use 2 separate ISOs, i.e. PCLinuxOS-KDE and PCLinuxOS-LXDE, or you might install from only one of them and add the task package for the other to one or both computers.

You also have the option of making a LiveCD/Remaster of one system and reinstall that onto a second (or more) PC's

Right, great, thanks for the explanation. Too easy. Good links, thankyou Neal ManBear (funny name, funny Guy  ;) )

You know menotu, I have considered "making a LiveCD/Remasterit", but it is so easy to Install and Setup a new release .iso an do a fresh install;  these just being hobby Computer's, all backed up on Ext HDD's,  don't really feel I need the extra pain. Great suggestion though, thankyou.

Ponder Edit...
Openbox ?: I will look at Wikipedia, great site ! ( Do Donate!)
Find the two Desktop Environments don't suit me. Then there's Openbox in my LXDE, easier to research this stuff isn't it, sorry.

Bloody good idea the, "task package (meta package) for a second desktop environment", don't get me wrong. Just here to learn, it's a 'Strange New World', GROK time required.
