[SOLVED] Swap partition with PCLinuxOS LXDE 2011
« on: December 06, 2011, 08:33:06 PM »
Does PCLinuxOS LXDE 2011 require SWAP Partition in HDD? Or is it recommended?
In any of both cases, how can I verify if I have it, not using Gparted, for security reasons with that program?
And, If it is convenient to have a SWAP Partition, how can I create one without putting in risk my current installation?
I have PCLinuxOS LXDE 2011-09 installed in HDD and functioning well.
The thing is that I realized about the convenience of having a SWAP partition when I tried another LiveCD Distro, and during the process I got a message stating that I don't have that partition and that it is recommended to have one.

If you have a big amount of RAM, it's not necessarily needed anymore....
=> however, if you want to be able to hibernate, search the forum about SWAP (I always take 2x RAM size for SWAP, but less is apparently possible according to some posts on the forum)...

You can view by going to PCLinuxOS Control Center => Local Drives >> Manage partitions (this is not gparted, but a PCLinuxOS native partition manager)  :)

Security reasons with Gparted? I don't understand what you're getting at. To see if you have a swap partition or file in use, open a terminal and enter cat /proc/swaps. You don't need root permissions.

Bare metal                           VBox
AMD Athlon 7750 Dual-Core    Single core
4GiB RAM                              1GiB RAM
nVidia GeForce FX 5200          64MB video
LXDE 32bit                            KDE 64bit

rubentje1991: thank you for your post. I have 2561MB RAM (400 MB used), so I might not need the SWAP Partition. I went to the Control Center, as you indicated, and verified that I don't have SWAP Partition.

djohnston: I applied cat /proc/swaps in LXTerminal and confirmed that I don't have SWAP Partition. When I mentioned that I prefer not to use Gparted is because my limited experience with Linux, and I already had an error during an OS installation process in which I formatted a wrong HDD. Fortunately I had a backup. Now I am very, very careful when using format software. Little by little, and specially with the help of all you in this Forum I am learning. Thank you.

I must say that I still feel a void in my stomach every time GParted check the hard drives when I'm formating an external device   :-\
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.
