I tried pc linux control center but did not find a change password/login? section where that is done.

Menu > More Applications > Configuration > Configure Your Computer (PCC - PCLinuxOS Control Center) >>> System (menu on left) > Manage users on system (right pane, left row at the bottom) > right click your username when the pane opens and choose Edit from the menu.

OK, did it...but then I x out and opened back up to find the same amount of dots, is there a minimum num of letters or numbers for a password? Do you have to re boot for it to take effect?

"x out?" Do you mean click the X in the upper right? IMO, it would be better to use File > Quit to exit PCC and any of its wizards. The X closes but Quit exits the application assuring you of a clean (nothing left open/running in the background) shutdown of the process.

I would advise against a short password, especially if it is a word found in any dictionary. After changing your password, on logout you will need to give your new password to log in. Reboot is not required.

Thanks Neal. Good to know. I'll go back in and redo it then  file-quit instead of hitting the x. When I go back it's going to show the same number of dots for password. I wonder if it actually changed. I don't need all that though. Don't need name, user, then password. Just a simple password will do since I'm the only user and it stays in house usually.

newbit,
When you say, "..... it's going to show the same number of dots for password," what do you mean?

Actually, you need a username and password; i.e. the user is identified by name. The user (username) plus the password is used to log in.

under users and groups, where it shows  "password: ....."  there are still the same 5 dots, even though the number of characters I entered for new password have changed. Don't know if that matters though.

Thanks. That's a big hurdle. Another nuisance is the touchpad which has no more use of the vertical slide on the right side or the tap to right click feature. Any ideas?

Today, I find a log on screen w/user and login names there and I have to add my password which it told me it couldn't take during installation! I entered my original one and after 10 tries it let me in.  What's going on and how do I change them so there will be no surprises. It is not in login screen configuration, security, and add/edit users showed a password but may not be accepting a new one there. Where do I chge it?   The whole system is beautiful and very thoughtfully and tastefully done by the way, congratulation on an amazing job.

Hi,

You might be confusing different things : a password for GRUB would be a password that forces you to enter a password right at the start, when the choices for booting the system are displayed : the GRUB boot manager display. When the boot is finished, you may have what is called a Login screen.

You are not forced to use one.

You need a user password;
You need a root (=admin) password, for administration tasks;

You can configure your system to boot directly to the desktop without a login screen : I think it might be what you are looking for ?

Please take a look here:

Set up auto-login to automatically log in - auto-login is not as secure as having to login, because anyone can start your computer and do anything with it. However, some people like having their computer bring up the desktop upon boot, and this is where you configure it. In my case I have an old laptop in the living room for some quick, occasional web-browsing. My adult daughter occasionally comes in and looks something up as well. I have the laptop configured to auto-login. I keep important files on my desktop computer with the normal login screen, and don't share any files or drives with the laptop.

This might help you ?

Neal, I think he did say something about GRUB password:

But while installing, I was asked to set up user, root, password then it said no passwords w/grub or something like that, so had to delete them.

It is indeed difficult to understand, what he did delete for example : he does not say, no idea ! My answer is based on suppositions, and whether it fits in or not, I gave the link to the mag with it's doc/howto, and I think the howto to get an autologin (whether he knows that it exists or not) might be useful to him. ;)
