OpenBox 11.11 and wifi with a mind of it's own!!!
« on: December 04, 2011, 06:32:35 PM »
Hi All

Hoping someone may have some ideas here.

OpenBox 11.11 is on an Acer Netbook with an Intel centrino N 1000 wifi

Quite often it is so slow to load and at times won't when in Firefox and when I check it has changed to to "unlisted manual" from my regular one

Cheers for Years
Colin

I would rename /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf to /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf.old and try to set it up again.

Hi Colin,
Open PCManFM, browse to /etc, then in the menu "Tools", hit "Open current directory as root". Select the says file, right-click on it and hit rename. Rename it as said Galen. Close the root side of PCManFM (be careful while you have root priviledges in a file manager... go slowly). :)

Thanks for helping Melodie. I am using my kde4 machine at the moment, and didn't remember the easiest way to do it in Openbox.

Yes. My laptop has 1gb ram. Enough for most things, but I am brutal in multi-tasking. I often have 10+ tabs open in firefox, writer, konqueror, thunderbird, konsole and synaptic all open at the same time. I think zram helps make this possible, but it is very difficult to set up a real scientific test to prove it. ;D

Right, to do a benchmark, it would also take time, if it is possible to do so.

Else, has anyone noticed a new Edu is ready for test ? :)

Thanks Melodie

Did that - and when I went to set wifi up again - AGAIN it was in "unlisted" - so again set it up as the ISP wifi

Will see what happens I suppose

Am off to reboot and see if any other peculiarities take place

OOPSSS!!!  :-[ :-[ :-[ here we go again

After reboot - found after a little while through the pclcc it was back as unlisted - so set it up again and again it resulted in the same strange slow slwo behaviour - ie - trying to connect for email and on first start up of FF - showing - go to website - NOT my home page.

This reply is from the AMD Quad

I've had problem with connecting to wifi after using a usb-ethernet device. Do you have any other ways that you connect to internet?

As of now the netbook only connects via wifi - although I can used Wired in the computer room

Just had about 15mins of fun and games - nearly every time i set the wifi up in Control Center or by right clickinf the wifi on bottom taskbar - it reset itself to 'unlisted"

Do not know what is happening - but maybe the Acer does not like to co-habit with OpenBox - what do you think???

Again tgis is on the AMD Quad - shut netbook down for a while

Network Center and net_applet are common to all versions of PCLinuxOS. It might help to ask in the networking section where more users of all of the desktops may read it.

I would also try a livecd of one of the other light desktops and see if this problem is related to your hardware or to Openbox.

Hi,
Have you setup your country ISO in the advanced section of the wifi configuration ?

Can you open a console, become root in it, and type "lsmod" : bring back the result please. You also may want to look here: WI-FI Connection Problem

You are not alone ! :)

PS: have you authorized users to run the connection ? If not, the wifi won't be up when starting a new session.
