Hi again

Just an update - that LAST post of mine took 20 mins or so to do as wifi kept reverting to "unlisted" and i did not even know if it had been posted.

If possible please bear with me until I can satisfy what is needed to take this HOPEFULLY to a successful conclusion

Cheers for years

Hootiegibbon : I wonder why each time someone has an issue with something in an Openbox version you point out to zram. Is it because it is not currently used in PCLinuxOS ? I regret that it is not, because if it would, we might have people interested to learn how to tweak it according to different configurations, maybe get someone to be interested to make a gui to configure options (activate/deactivate, add more % of the available RAM when there is a lot in a machine, or less for test purpose... create several ramdisks instead of one... with maybe different levels of priorities... Most modern distributions have used Compcache (the project where the use of zram comes from) for a long time now, including some well known rpm distributions, as you can see here. I have myself used it during several years in several distributions, a very light one, and another, several machines, and never a problem arized due to it's use. You might want to give it a try in one of your Light systems.

Regards,
Mélodie

Mel,

There are a few reasons why I ask for ZRAM to be deactivated

1. to troubleshoot you need an even playing ground, NONE of the other releases use ZRAM

2. ZRAM has (in the past) been Linked to data corruption, and scheduling issues , neither is ever a good thing, no matter how rare, if just one user has has data messed up that is 1 too many, here is the issue page atm

3. we use Kernel 2.6.38.x,  ZRAM is listed as being in the driver staging tree within Linux Kernel development - and is described as being experimental use at own risk , considering that it may or may not enter the Kernel Next Tree development are, this should be the users choice whether to activate or not (or a least give clear warning that it IS activated), I think things may have progressed in the Kernels >3.1 although we are not there yet

Colin,

Can you check to see if the packages I mentioned are listed in synaptic as being installed, and post teh results of ifconfig and iwconfig - please xxx out your wep/wpacode

And in light of that message for wlan0, can you use pastebin.org to post the contents of dmesg as well please

And as your router keeps hiding itself can you confirm the type of wireless encryption you are using and the model of router

Jase

Think I tried ifconfig and iwconfig and they came back - can't find - but will try again - have put most of these commands on Libreoffice so I can use them even when wifi is acting up.

Do not use encryption that I know of - ISP rep just set it up and off we went

Off to see if Acer is alive & well and will get back to you

Mel,

(...)

Yes, you can suggest deactivating zram, but it has nothing to do with a wifi connection failing. I won't argue more about zram... and "use at your own risk" warnings in the world of Free software. :)

kamicota : I have done, cut, cropped, uploaded and posted a screenshot. The fields which are shown in the shots are relevant to some technical information I read some time ago already at the Mandriva wiki fr. (And use for my own needs). One is related to ipv6 : your output show it uses ipv6. You may leave it... or you may try to deactivate it and, if it is not better with just ipv4 reactivate it after a test. The timestamp story you can deactivate. The window scaling is much better off deactivated, *unless* your connection is on a very wide bandwidth. (Not Adsl).

When you will have played with the advanced options, you might find the connection more stable. One other thing which can also help would be to remove any other connection : you could remove the wired connection (eth0). It can help (and is easy to reconfigure if needed).

Mélodie

Open the PCLinuxOS Control Center. Hit on the left : "Network and Internet". Then at top left, under the title "Manage Network Peripherals", hit the button "Network Center". Here you are ! Then in this window, at the bottom you have a button with this written on it : "Advance parameters". Click on it. Now you got the window ! :)

Colin,

That is one of the packages that should be installed , that I asked you to check synaptic for - see my post above.
****edit*** the dmesg states that the ucode (the firmware) is being loaded

I think this is more to do with how your wireless router is set up, which wireless router is it?, from what I can tell it is serving address to your pc and keeping active for a while.

An isp should exercise more diligence and at least provide some protection from wardrivers and driveby hackers.

If your router is "bgn" and your wireless card is "n" then your router MAY need to be changed to a "n" only state.

I have never had to mess about with regulatory settings within PCC it should "just work".

also when you originally set up teh wireless connection , did you go via the network applet in the system try or go via teh PCLinuxOS Control Center > network & Internet > set up new

The wireless router is and - SMC 8014WN -WPA-PSK/WPA2 PSK

The Tech - set up the Modem & the Wireless Router in the Computer room

I then accessed via Wireless from the l;iving room - but I think that was a previous Laptop - NOT the present netbook

And have no idea whether it is "bgn" or "n" -

I go both ways jase - netapplet & also PCC control center

Will check your previous post and see what needs to checked in synaptic - when Acer is turned back on

Cheers for years

I have never had to mess about with regulatory settings within PCC it should "just work".

It is not just the regulatory domain but also the other 3 options to consider. In the country where I live, I have had Adsl : from 1 MB up to 15, and in between we have had 2 MB Adsl. We had a Linksys router, then we had to change ISP and now have another box, which provides wired and wireless connections. As said before, some connections need to be fine tuned in the advanced options : so it does not hurt to get a look and give a try to these options. If I don't set them up, here, I simply have an unstable wifi connection (the router is on ground floor and the machine is often on first floor).

Mélodie
