PCLinuxEdu : Gcompris slow to start in live (Solved)
« on: December 01, 2011, 09:45:44 AM »
Hi,
While testing the version published in French, a guy said Gcompris did not launch from the desktop icon. In fact it does but takes so much time you could start 3 other programs while it launches.

I tested, and confirm. I tried to use the good prelink program to attempt to solve the issue. At same time I try to spare Cdroms, so once prelink installed, configured, and the install of pclinuxos education fr remastered once more, I installed to USB Stick with the great script from Just18, PCLinuxOS Live USB. The result is : in Live, it's still very long before it starts while in Persistent mode it runs instantly, provided it has been ran once, before.

I all cases the latest in French contains the hidden config files from Gcompris : in the home of "school" (ecole in French) and in /etc/skel/.config/

If anyone has a good idea about how it occurs and how to eventually solve this, it would be most welcome !

Regards,
Mélodie

That's look like some initialization activity, which occur one time while using persistence, but need to be performed each time when running live...

If so, performing a remaster *after* gcompris has been already ran at least once, should solve the issue.

Hi,
Sorry I was a bit tired when I posted, I thought I post because it's been two days I thought I would.

Running Gcompris once prior to remastering, and copy the new files to /etc/skel : $HOME/.config/gcompris, and $HOME/My Gcompris is what I tried first. It was not giving the expected result, so I added prelink (and put "rpm -e prelink" in the rc.sysinit to be removed at post-install).

After adding prelink it was not giving the expected result either. It seams that it creates a db file at each new start... but I am not sure why it does that, and if it would be as long in the normal install if launched in a new Xsession.

This is why I am asking help to try to see if it can be improved.

Regards,
Mélodie

Hi,
I just burned a CD to offer to my son, (the very latest with gcompris config files and prelink at work in the Live) and surprise : in Live CD Gcompris has started at once !

I'll have to do more tests in the Live USB. I don't know why in it's Live boot it didn't run at once as in the Live CD.

Hi,

The following setup solved the issue:

Code: [Select]
# prelink -vmR /usr/bin/gcompris
The prelink.cache then is not bigger than 5.5KB and the result is at it's best !
