Keyboard not detected on Gateway Laptop
« on: December 01, 2011, 08:19:14 AM »
I have a Gateway Laptop Model # 6010GZ, Using a Dual Boot XP and Mint 10, and I would like to replace Mint 10 with PCLinux OS 2011.7 XFCE!
However with the Live CD it will not properly detect my keyboard layout. I have tried the Xfce keyboard editor but have not found a layout that works. PCLinuxOS 2010.12 does properly detect my keyboard, but I like the appearance of the newer version. I have downloaded the ISO 2 times from 2 different mirrors and used a Live USB drive with the same results.
Please Help!!!

Thanks!!

When you boot up: do you get the keyboard selector (some time ago I did an install  :-\)
=> if it is there, it doesn't work? (or is that one removed in the last releases - someone else who can bring clarification?)

XFCE defaults to Keyboard UK. You have to change it to Keyboard US when you get to the keyboard screen if you are in the USA otherwise your keyboard keys will be screwy.

Thanks, I saw that it defaults to UK Keyboard, but I have tried to change it to US keyboard or US Keyboard International at boot-up and neither one worked.

Have you tried to change it AFTER booting?  Did it then work?

It is a gateway Laptop keyboard not an external one. Windows Xp control panel shows it as a PC/AT Enhanced PS/2 101/102 keyboard.

Maybe try a Spanish .....  somewhat different again ....  as I am sure are lots of keyboards for different languages.

Spanish is my 2nd or 3rd most used layout.... (vacations  ::) :P ;))
Yep, too many layouts (in the past I was learned we were nearly the only ones with a specific layout - azerty....., but last years, I came to know new keyboards.... Netherlands, Belgium/France, Germany (qwertz), Spanish (ñ), .....
=> and I type also the punctuation marks blindly -- most difficult thing to get used to when switching to another layout (the changed layout of alphanumeric keys is just a matter of minutes to get used to a little bit)
