Option icon 515m 3G dongle - Cant connect
« on: November 29, 2011, 03:47:07 PM »
I've never had any success using this dongle in any KDE environments. It works fine in Windows and Linux Mint, ubutu, opensuse and several others running gnome desktops.

I have no idea if KDE is the problem, I am certainly no linux expert.

When plugged in it shows up in network manager but when clicked on it comes up with the following error.

Unable to open device /dev/ttyHS0

After searching around this forum and google a few people had suggested creating a symbolic link to point at one of the other HS* entries.

I have tried ttyHS0,ttyHS1,ttyHS2 and ttyHS3.  all of them allow me to enter configuration settings in network manager, but none of them connect. They all find the network as Orange and the light on the dongle goes from flashing to a steady light, which usually means it's connected, but no joy. I know the APN,user, pass are correct as they work everywhere else.

Utmsmon does not see the modem at all.

I have also tried installing Sakis3G, but that does the same as network manager. It finds the modem but fails to connect.

The dongle has a microSD card slot, I have tried it with the card in and the card out, same result.

This dongle has been out now for a few years so there must be a solution by now. I really want to give PCLOS a whirl but without Internet it's next to useless for me.

I am hoping there is a simple solution to this as like I said I am no linux expert, so if any kind soul decides to help, step by step instructions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm no expert in this matter at all...
but what happens if you disable the wlan during boot...?

Is the dongle already inserted at boot? Did you try to reboot and try again?
Maybe you can try WiCD Network Manager (if you can get another way of connecting to the internet) => helps with my wifi-problems... (where the stock network manager can't connect...)

Hope this helps in some way...

Success!

Thanks for the suggestions :)

I have tried it before with the dongle in at boot, and without, even rebooted with in and it makes no difference at all.

I haven't tried WiCD Network Manager because as far as I know it don't work with 3G connections.

Thanks anyway :)

You're right  :-[ (didn't check that out  :) )
=> maybe someone else knows a solution (because, as I said, I'm no expert in these things)....

Have you read through these suggestions?:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,56672.0.html
=> they contain advice from users with more knowledge than me (and there are a bunch of  8)) for wifi networks - but at posting a problem, the output of some of the commands is probably useful
=> then, when they have time, they can look through it, and maybe find the cause within a short time (if you already posted the output of the commands in advance - please do it in CODE / QUOTE tags in forum post  :))

Well I think I have got this working - sort of  ;D using HSOconnect from http://www.peck.org.uk/hsoconnect.html

It comes up with a few error about not finding hsolink ( which I did install ) but it does connect. I have a really poor signal where I am now so wont know if it's any good until I get a better signal. It did load up a few websites so it does work.

After connecting with HSOconnect, When I click on Network Centre it shows as connected but still complains about not finding ttyHS.

I am sure there is a proper solution to this, so I'm still open to any suggestions as development of HSOconnect has finished as according to the website it is no longer needed.

=> one package for helping Option 3G modules....

Don't know how I can help; but I'm interested in what solution(s) can be available

With your dongle plugged in
Open a terminal and type lsusb and press enter
then post the output

uname -r
2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs

The output of lsusb is -

Code: [Select]
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0af0:d157 Option
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 064e:a103 Suyin Corp. Acer/HP Integrated Webcam [CN0314]
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Ok I had another go installing hsolinkconrol ( dont think I done anything different lol ) and now HSOconnect has stopped complaining about not finding it.

I did NOT install the ozerocdoff or edit the udev rules for HSOconnect as I figured something must have been switching the modem as it was showing up in Network centre.

HSOconnect is working well and seems to keep a stable connection.

I don't know if this counts as solved as there is probably an easy way to get this to work with Network Centre. I'm still open to suggestions. This dongle was a big seller in the UK, so might help someone else who's struggling.

Well it didn't show up as a usb device.
What I was hoping to see was that it a device located
at possibly /dev/usb/ttyHS1 or /dev/usb/ttyHS2 - ect.
