Wallpaper gone & right click is strange????? [SOLVED]
« on: November 26, 2011, 03:33:38 PM »
Hello everyone: just when I think it is impossible to break pclinux, one of my co-workers manages to do it. First let me say that I am not that familiar with LXDE, I have always used KDE, but the old dell 4100 was a good candidate for LXDE, and it has been doing well. So, I took it to the Fire Station for three of us to use and I set it up with 3 user accounts, well user #2 asks me today if I can look at the computer because "he doesn't know what he did, but his desktop is now blank" So I log into his account and sure enough the icons are there but the wallpaper is gone and the desktop is a solid pinkish color, But, if I right click on the desktop, I get a "greyed" out box that doesn't look anything like it did when I installed LXDE. I went to LXDE control panel and got him a wallpaper back, but still don't have the "right click" option on the desktop. Any idea what he may have done to cause this and how do I fix it. Thanks for any help.

Easy fix: Open PCManFM > click View > mark Show Hidden Files > open ./config folder > rename the pcmanfm folder to pcmanfm.bak > unmark Show Hidden Files > close PCManFM. Log out/log in.
This will set everything back to defaults, unless your friend removed or deleted something he shouldn't have. - Though he may claim he doesn't know of anything he did, it is far more likely that he doesn't wish to admit that he tried doing something without knowing what would happen. LOL No big deal on easy to fix stuff.

I have found that this is most always the case Neal. I will be back in front of that computer on Tuesday and I 'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the help.

Hey Neal: tried the fix you recommended and still have a right click issue on the desktop. I get a pop up box labeled "openbox" that says "failed to execute command for pipe -menu openbox-menu -t sakura -e failed to execute child process, "openbox-menu" (no such file or directory)
Hope this helps.

Question:
Is this an openbox install with task-lxde added?

Other questions:
What happens if you do the same with the openbox folder as recommended with the PCManFM folder?

When was the original install done? Which ISO (version, etc) was used?

O K , I'll try to answer the questions in order. Renaming the openbox folder fixed the right click on the desktop, BUT, It seems to be an "openbox" menu instead of LXDE. The install was done about two weeks ago using LXDE 2011.7 I believe, whatever the newest one is on PCLinuxOS site. How in the world did he switch it from an LXDE desktop to an openbox desktop? I didn't think that was possible, and how do I switch it back? By the way, I still have a "Configure your LXDE" button in the toolbar and it still brings up the lxde control center. Sorry to waste your time on something like this, but I'm at a loss as to how to repair it. Thanks for your help.

Do you have "openbox-menu" installed? If so, remove it. :-\ It is an app intended to add a menu structure to Openbox, but it can sometimes mess up the right-click menu in LXDE.

Well I suppose the important thing is that it is fixed. It does leave us wondering how the problem was created though, doesn't it?
