I have spent a good part of today testing all the live DVD/CDs and live USBs I could conveniently get my hands on. In each case I booted up on the Lenovo Q190 and checked whether or not it would open the W8 partition on the host.
Here are the results:
LXDE 2012.12 live CD No problems
LXDE 2012.12 live USB No problems
KDE32 2013.02 live CD No problems
KDE64 2013.04 live CD No problems
KDE64 2013.04 live USB No problems
LXDE 2013.06 live CD Failed
LXDE 2013.06 live USB Failed initially OK after upgrading udisk2 and rebooting twice
Lets be logical here:
1. You cannot boot from an external device unless W8 has been completely shut down. So it has nothing to do with hibernation, quick boot or whatever, they don't check for alternative boot.
2. Only LXDE 2013.06 has given any problems. You don't have to be a Sherlock Holmes to deduce that this is where the problem lies. (I did check the checksum in case the download was corrupted.)
You cannot upgrade the live CD as this doesn't persist through a re-boot. Not only will it not open the W8 partition it won't open any other partitions on the host or a detachable device. Not much use!
A single reboot after the udisk2 upgrade gave the error message I reported above. It was only when, after all that experimenting, I went back to it that it did mount the W8 partition, and continued to do so a couple more times.
I'm only reporting what happened, I cannot explain it.
It seems to me that a second release of 2013.06 with udisk upgraded is required.
