Hello, I have recently installed Pclinuxos2011 off a CD (not full Monty)and cannot get Compiz to work. I had previously installed the 2010 version of pclinux to give it a try  and was very impressed with it as well as the Compiz  effects  that worked well on the computer. After deciding to install the 2011 version I noticed that I had to install Compiz manually, so using the synaptic package manager I installed all the packages that I could with Compiz in the title and also installed the Fusion icon package but still cannot get the effects to work. My video card is a RS480 Radeon xpress 200g and the module is ATI Radeon x1950 (if this helps). Any help in getting this to work would be greatly appreciated.

Probably your video card is too old now since we upgraded xorg server and mesa gl to current levels. This was discussed in the xorg migration board back in June 2011. PCLinuxOS 2010 had a 4 year old xorg sever and mesa gl drivers so that is why it probably worked then and doesn't now. Have you tried using KDE's built in Desktop Effects instead of Compiz?

Hi johndepere - have you tried running the KWin Desktop Effects which are very good.

Configure Your Desktop >> Workspace Appearance & Behaviour  >> Desktop Effects >> All Effects

Thank you  both very much for your quick reply. I obviously will not be using compiz because of my out dated video card as pointed out by the first poster. The issue that I have  when using KWin is that  when I enable all desktop effects, there are boxes that appear when I mouse over items in the menu bar and inside these boxes are graphics from the page beneath. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

Could try unticking the Translucency (again within Configure Your Desktop >> Workspace Appearance & Behaviour  >> Desktop Effects >> All Effects ) and see if that helps - note, may need to restart your desktop (logout and in again)

Additionally, to get some nice looking colours/themes etc for your desktop you can try going to

Configure Your Desktop >> Common Appearance & Behaviour  >> Application Appearance >> Colours

and

Configure Your Desktop >> Workspace Appearance & Behaviour  >> Desktop Theme

and

Configure Your Desktop >> Workspace Appearance & Behaviour  >> Workspace Appearance >> Window Decorations

If you look at some of those you may see somethings to suit - there are of course icons / fonts / and more which can be changed but I'd suggest doing the above one at a time simply because you may not know which setting has done what if they are all changed in one go  Wink
