Have a dual boot system with Windows XP and Pclinuxos kde 2011.06. Would like to ditch XP but my scanner is not supported. The scanner is a Xerox Visioneer 4800 USB model. Can carry out most routine tasks but do not know my back end from my front end as far as scanners are concerned. Would appreciate it if some one could give me step by step instructions on how to configure it manually.

What did you try to use your scanner in PCLinuxOS already?

Have you installed task-scanning in Synaptic?

Have tried to open the scanner using Xsane and get the message "scanner not found." If I try to install the Scanner in control centre, the scanner is recognised but is unsupported and has to be installed manually! Have installed task-scanning from synaptic with the same result.

"but is unsupported and has to be installed manually!"

Right, I have seen that before also with a Epson printer. Did you actually proceeded searching for that driver (you should see a "search" button). In my case I easily found the right driver that way.

EDIT: it looks like you are out of luck. Xerox and Visineer do not provide Linux drivers for this model (Let them know!) while SANE also comes up with "unsupported".  http://sane-project.meier-geinitz.de/lists/sane-backends-cvs.html
