I know how to change which to use but I wanted to know how I can know which is the closest to me?

I am in NY. I took a guess and picked the last one, ibililo.org I think it is.

Other servers have the .be or .cz so I can tell where those are, just wanted to know which would be good and closest to NY.

Thanks Smiley

PCLinuxOS 2011 2 - KDE4

The closest may not be your best.  There is a script to run that test the repo's and tells which works best but can recall the name off hane I ll check if you don't find it first.

the closest one or the best one?

no matter the distance, what matters is speed of the repo

you can test some and compare results, if one gives you only 80 kbps and other offers you 300 kbps it doesn't matter the distance

lol Right, either or is fine, I said closest since it made more sense that a closer one is usually the best/fastest.

But to test them, hmm, I would have to go through each of the ones I think with each update then?  Shocked

lol thought there might be a better/easier way to this.  Undecided

No.
Just run the program we gave you above in reply  2 & 3 and it will tell you the fastest

I'm not, I went through them, refreshed the sources for a few servers and found that the node server was the fastest for me ( downloads around 700k )

"But to test them, hmm, I would have to go through each of the ones I think with each update then?"

not necessarily, you could do a test, uninstal and install a 30 mbs package, for example a kernel

the size is enough to give you a idea on how fast a particular repo is and you are not breaking your install

I don't appear to have this on my system (fully up to date). Where do I find it / get it?

Even for this rig, performance is good and all 3d works

In the repository, of course. Smiley In Synaptic, search for "update sources list" or "repo speed test."

The specific package name is "apt-sources-update" and it does appear in the repos with Neal's search terms. Try doing a reload in Synaptic. "Version 0.3-3pclos2011" should be there.

As of this morning "apt-sources-update" DOES NOT show up in Synaptic

I have check on my repository, pclosusers.com, heanet.ie, andrzejl.cyryl.net, and ibiblio.org  It DOES NOT exist on any of them! Neither does either suggestion that Neal posted.
