I used synaptic to update/upgrade firefox.  Now i can 't browse via Firefox or Konqueror.

I can ping router wirelessly.
I can use synaptic to update and install new packages.
Both wired and wireless internet browsing do not work.

Any idea of how to fix? Sort of a newbie.

Thanks,

Hi and welcome to the forum!

If you can update using synaptic, it means that the network subsystem is working OK.
You say you can ping the router, can you ping some external site ? i.e. www.google.com ?

Try to create a new user, log out and re login as new user: does Firefox work from the new user account ?
If yes there it could be some issue around your configuration files, if not it is a system wide issue.

Did you run aptupgrade in the past months (if required) ?

You should never use Synaptic to upgrade a single application. Always upgrade your full system frequently (fortnightly at least).

And if you haven't installed and run aptupgrade you need to do that first.

Thank you for your replies.

I had installed and run aptupgrade.  However I installed it from Synaptic.  I didn't catch that it could not be run from Synaptic.  However it ran and seemed to work.

You are correct i should update all system files.  I did that and it did not help.

I *could* PING www.google.com !

I created a new test  user and Firefox WORKS!  (In fact Im using it now.)

Now how do i fix my user?

Thanks again.

I fixed firefox by deleting the profile directory and letting FF restore it.  I was able to back up my bookmarks and then restore.

Konqueror is still not working.  Looking for it's Profile directory now.

Everything seems ok at the moment with FF.

Mebbe try switching Konqueror's browser engine from KHTML to WebKit (or vice versa)

Settings > Configure Konqueror > General tab - default browser engine

menotu,
Thank you for your suggestion. I tried it and it did not work.  FF works. Konqueror does not work.  I normally use FF. But I want Konqueror to work.

To make sure it worked, open Konsole and enter rpm --version. Should be 4.8.1

Are you fully upgraded? If not, do that first. Then install task-lxde to make sure you have everything.

strange..
you could try
1. rm -rf /usr/share/apps/konqueror/
2. open konqueror then Go>Home Page and see if it works
3. Reinstall kdebase4-dolphin-4.6.5-1pclos2011
if the problem persist see if this http://www.konqueror.org/investigatebug/#http can help you
