I can report success, finally, I have the GUI back.

But things are not quite right with the packages yet. The Task-kde4 package is missing from many of the repositories, & the ones where I found it, it had some dependency problem. If I try to do an up date synaptic still wants to remove 98 packages & not update a bunch more.

Thanks to all especially Old-Polack

Could you give us a list of the packages it wants to remove, and those it won't upgrade? Maybe we can figure out what's missing from the equation and get you back on track.

This is what my "/var/log/kdm.log" said about it:
Quote
error setting MTRR (base=0xF4000000 size=0x04000000 type=1) Inappropriate ioctl for device (25)
(EE) Chrome(0): [dri] VIADRIScreenInit failed (libdri.a is too old)
Anyone else checked that log?
I noticed when I tried the apt-get (last resort), a couple of the files that are "kept back" are X11 video driver files. ??

Edit: I tried the "apt-get upgrade" again. I'm backed up, so nothing to lose. I can experiment all I want.
Here is the entire list:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or that some of the repositories
in use are in an inconsistent state at the moment.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
x11-driver-video-ati: Depends: rpmlib(PayloadIsLzma) (<= 4.4.6-1) but it is not installable
All attempts have responded the same way.

We do not use the apt-get upgrade command; it will bork your system. The correct command is apt-get dist-upgrade. The latter command is the only correct way to upgrade your system with apt-get.

Yes, sir. You are correct. On that part, I was a dummy.

However, this is being posted on my now mostly recovered PCLinuxOS box now.  Smiley
Only one thing missing. The login (greeting) splash screen is still weird. How do I get that downloaded from the repository?

Here is how I did it:
Login as root at the weird splash screen an at the prompt, type 'synaptic'.
Search for aptupgrade and install it.
exit synaptic and type at the prompt '/usr/bin/aptupgrade' (I think. It may have been 'apt upgrade')
Start synaptic again and finish the upgrades.

My 'upgrade' unistalled kde, so I had to install kde with synaptic. Search for kde and install.

I'm still checking the rest. I had to reset my video and user privileges.

Seems my problem was much the same. This link here may help some log in again:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,99448.0.html

Then when I did get back into my KDE, I discovered some missing stuff. A synopsis of what I've discovered so far is some essential KDE komponents (spelling deliberate) were missing; KWallet, KDM (for login) konsole (a nifty terminal routine) all of which I managed to replace through synaptic simply by designating them and having them load. They are now working.

Less fortunate is my Flightgear is affected, as OpenSceneGraph plugins were removed, and I cannot get them back. At first I tried through synaptic, simply reinstalling FG, and OSG would reinstall along with that. Nope! can't get to OSG plugins via Synaptic, and yes, i have
Code:
rpm http://distro.ibiblio.org/pclinuxos/megagames/apt/ pclinuxos/2010 megagames
added to my sources.list in /etc/apt.

Code:
Error message:
While installing package libgdal1-1.8.1-3pclos2011:
W: Failed to fetch http://mirror.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/mirror/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/RPMS.updates/OpenSceneGraph-plugins-3.0.1-1pclos2011.i586.rpm
  404 Not Found

So, I tried through apt-get install. No luck there either. That's what I've found so far .....

@tren: The file name has changed on the plugin.
http://mirror.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/mirror/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/RPMS.updates/OpenSceneGraph-plugins-3.0.1-2pclos2011.i586.rpm
Maybe you can install it separately.

Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.

putting "rpm" in front of it makes no difference; same error message.

Okay, this is really weird: going back to my /etc/apt directory, I found:

  OpenSceneGraph-plugins~.1-2pclos2011.i586.rpm│2898472│Nov 13 02:29

residing there; does this mean it downloaded the rpm (in its entirety?) but failed to install it?

Sorry about the delay getting back.

From what I see there are some major inconsistencies between repositories. Most repositories no longer have the task-kde4 meta package.  When you update against one of those it wants to remove 141 packages & hold back 103. All of the packages that it tries to remove are kde4 related

There are a few repositories that do have the task-kde4 package listed. If I update using that repository, it reports back that two missing dependencies: kdebase4-workspace & kdeutil4.

You will have to reinstall from the newest 2011.9 .iso image.
