Last night before retiring, did my a Synaptic update for PCLinuxOS. Its been about a week since my last update. During the update, I noticed on the status line that it said 1 package being updated, 156 (?) packages being removed and zero broken. The one package took about a minute to complete and the message in the updating box indicated a BSD module I believe. Given the number of packages, I was concerned of the number being removed but shut the system down and figured if there was a problem would deal with it in the morning. Well, there is a problem!
The system did the regular boot, i.e. saw the PCLinuxOS boot screen and watched the progress, then it came up with a login screen - one that I had not seen before. All it was, was a rectangular box in the upper third of the screen. It contained "Welcome to LP" (LP is the hostname), the word Login and next to it a box to enter the user name (no drop down list). Trying either my regular username or the userid of root results are the same. It looks like it is doing some processing, the screen goes blank and then in a few seconds, I am brought back to the same login screen. Tried a reboot of the system, just in case the initialization hadn't been successful the first time but the same result.
Is it a fresh re-install? Is there anything else that will get me the proper login screen and let me back into my system?

Argh! Thanks Old-polack - not the response I was hoping for but that seems to be my day so far!
Just for future reference - did I miss doing something that caused this or was it just a fluke of an update?

I can say that I have tested both KDE Full and MiniMe upgrades with no issues.

If that question was to me Ramchu - fresh install to me means reinstalling the OS.

Anytime you see one package upgraded and 156 being removed, with nothing taking their place, you have to know something is amiss. That's your clue to stop, and ask some serious questions. Asking questions only after 10% or more of your installation is missing, is a tad late.

I get that. I was trying to ask if you reinstalled from an older version of PCLinux ?( how old is the Live CD or what ever you installed from ) What Desktop Environment ?( KDE - LXDE -ect )

Yup! Nope!Well, this is not what I wanted to hear! So reinstalling the OS means everything is gone? This is the second time for this for me. Say it isn't so!

If you have a separate /home partition, you can keep it and everything in it (presuming your data is all in your home directory). If you don't, you can use the LiveCD to backup your data (external USB key/drive; network; etc) before doing the (re-)install.

This apparently happened to me as well, and it happened in a flash before there was any time to react. Once I get to a command prompt, is there a was to roll back the last update??

Actually I can get back to a command line prompt as root in Safe mode, and the hard drive can be accessed through my lan. Is there any way to undo the last update from there?
