For Fathers' Day this year, my wife suggested that I take a subscription to my favourite magazine:
"The Shed" - published here in NZ (link : http://www.theshedmag.co.nz/online/  )

A competition was being run where new subscriptions were eligible to win a prize. That particular month, there were 10 Canon PIXMAR MG5150 multifunction printers available to be won.

At the beginning of October, I received a letter advising me that I was one of the lucky winners. Last week, the computer arrived. After hours of experimentation, I was unable to get the printer to even print a test page. It would copy. The symptoms were very similar to those experienced with another Canon printer in this thread:

Here is my contribution to the above thread
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,98458.msg840423.html#msg840423

A forum member, djohnston suggested that I start a new thread and link it to the previous one.
That is what this thread is about.

Update: This morning, I finally gave up on the printer - it will go to a family member who uses that other OS - and I bought a HP Deskjet 2050 for the ridiculously low price of $NZ 57. It does everything with PCLinuxOS that it is supposed to. Setting it up was easier than it would have been with either Wind**** or Mac. The purpose of this thread was to thank djohnston for his advice and point out that I will not be pursuing the quest for a suitable package for the printer. Thus the thread is marked with ABANDONED  rather than SOLVED.

Thank you djohnston for your help.

Thank you, jimwilk. At least I know my efforts are appreciated, although it's probably not the outcome we sought. In any event, I'm glad you have a working printer. Printers, scanners and specialized modems seem to give the most setup problems.
