this one makes no sense to me.  I've been using an Abit KN8 Ultra v1.1 mobo with onboard sound and an nVidia GeForce 7100 GT for video for many years, and had no issues.  Well, today I installed an ATI Radeon 4500 series in place of the nVidia card.  Graphics have improved, but sound is gone (mostly).  I get the login sound and can play an MP3 in VLC, but clementine refuses with the error,  "Could not open audio device for playback."

Nothing from the web has sound.

Did you check your playback settings in clementine? Dose the new card have an HDMI that it is possibly selecting as default?

I honestly don't care about clementine.  I'm more annoyed about youtube and pandora, which are where I usually go for music.  The new video card has set itself as a sound card, and that is something I would REALLY like to disable.  I just don't know how.

Are you using HDMI, DVI, or VGA to connect your monitor?

The monitor uses a VGA cable.  I'm using an adapter to attach it to one of the two DVI outputs on the card.  There are no HDMI connectors visible on the card.  I don't know how to disable snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi -- and I don't know what good that would do, as it is an ATI Radeon card.

Well if it doesn't have any HDMI ports I'm not sure why it would set it's self to be a sound card.  Huh Maybe the drive doesn't detect if it has an HDMI and just assumes by model? I'm not sure, I will try and look around but I'm probably not much help beyond this.

Have you tried checking the BIOS, make sure the sound is set to on-board. Also did you check the default audio set in "Configure Your Computer"

If you know what driver you use to use or look up what one you need you can try manually setting it under advanced.

actually, this thread ( http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,66982.0.html ) looks more applicable -- but I'm not sure how I'd adapt the information to my own use.

fwiw, here's my modprobe.conf:

Code:
install scsi_hostadapter /sbin/modprobe sata_nv; /sbin/modprobe pata_amd; /bin/true
install ide-controller /sbin/modprobe ide_generic; /bin/true
install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe ehci_hcd; /sbin/modprobe ohci_hcd; /bin/true
alias eth0 forcedeth
alias sound-slot-0 unknown
alias sound-slot-1 nvaudio

That card has a built-in 7.1 sound card according to AMD .....

http://www.amd.com/us/products/notebook/graphics/ati-mobility-hd-4000/hd-4500/Pages/hd-4500-specs.aspx
Quote
ATI Avivo™ HD video and display technology1
Unified Video Decoder 2 (UVD 2) for Blu-ray™ and HD Video
DVD Upscaling
Dynamic Contrast
Built-in HDMI with 7.1 surround sound support
DisplayPort™ with audio

If you use Pulse Audio there is a GUI method of turning off unwanted sound devices.

Where did you find that GUI?  As far as I can tell, it's not part of either PCLOS control center or KDE system settings.  The ATI Radeon always comes up first when I open hardware > sound in PCC, and it has no driver there.

I don't know that the card I want to blacklist is the one mentioned, especially since the referenced card is nVidia and mine is Radeon.

Change this

Code:
alias sound-slot-1 nvaudio

to this

Code:
#alias sound-slot-1 nvaudio

save the file and reboot.

Where did you find that GUI?

I know you can get one similar to that by opening mixer>settings>Audio Setup
