This problem is finishing the job on my sanity that too many years of working with computers has gotten well along.

the machine:
cpu:  i3-560
m/b:  Asus P7H55
Audio:  Asus Xonar (pci)
video:  MSI N8400gs (nvidia pci-e)
HD SATA 160gb

If I use the on-board video controller, there is no problem with the audio--pclos uses the card without question.  In fact it's the only distro I've found that will use the card.  Maybe a lot of others need an update of the drivers.  The problem I have is that if I put in the video card, pclos decides that it must use the HDMI as the audio output.  The same thing happened with an EVGA N8400 gs video card which also had an HDMI section.  I can't find any way to make pclos ignore the HDMI or at least bypass it. I haven't been able to find a pci-e video card that does not have an HDMI output..  Anyone know how to make pclos forget about the HDMI??

I have no such problem .......  I am using PulseAudio and turn off the HDMI in    pavucontrol   and so it never gets used.

I am certain there are other methods to do this without installing Pulse Audio ......  but i like my GUI controls  Cheesy

maybe look at setting your default audio card to something other than the HDMI ....

Linuzoid:

I just tried your solution as posted in the other area--thank you, thank you, thank you, IT WORKED.  In pclos there are two modprobe.d lists, so I put the driver entry in both, and all reference to HDMI is gone from the multi-media section of 'system setup'...

It ended up that I had to do a clean install, then change modprobe for it to work properly, but all-in-all, the problem is SOLVED..

Thanks to everybody--
