Did you install it while connected (preferably wired) with the internet? You might not have all the updates installed if not connected.

If you are getting only a graphical interface like the terminal then it seems your graphical card is not recognized.
Strange, as it is working good with the Live CD. Is it single boot, or dual boot with Win?

Dual boot with win 7, grub works fine and windows boots ok, have also tried safe mode but that hangs completely.

Did you check de ISO with MDsum? Maybe the ISO is not ok.
You could also have a partition problem. The number of primary partitions is limited to 4 and it is well known that with Win 7 you can have 4 already. In that case you will have to remove one.
You will find more information about that here on the forum.

Hi angus1964, Sorry to hear your having problems but they should be able to be ovecome.
when you get to the terminal prompt could you issue the following commands and make not of any error messages that come up
lspci (Post output here if any)
startx (post error messages)
kdm (post out put)
Thanks that may be of help in helping you.
Also you may want to update the system. by doing the following su <enter root password when asked> apt-get update followed by apt-get upgrade let it finish then reboot see what if anything happens.
Also it would be helpful to know the type of machine your trying to get it going on make manufactuer ram video card if known.
Dave
