Hello Tex and all PC Linux lovers. I am a long time PCL user, started when you installed, it was Gnome, and after you updated, it was KDE, ran MiniMe 2008 for a very long time, went through the "Big Update" mess when KDE 4 came out. I had some issues last year and installed Fedora, a distro I ran for many years, beginning with FC5.

I bought my wife a new Toshiba Satellite laptop for her birthday. It came, of course, with Windows 7 Ultimate. My wife, much like me, prefers Linux over Windows. So, we spent a few months trying different Linux operating systems. Never could get the Realtek/Broadcom wireless working. Oh, I made it work on Fedora, and another distro (She hates the other one)  but as soon as I unplugged the Ethernet Hard Line it would freeze up. Reboot, log in, and it would freeze up. So, back to Windows it would be. Two days ago she got a virus. Her laptop does not have a burner, so she lost a lot of stuff, photos, MP3s, and Videos she had downloaded and collected. Lost it all. She brought it to me and demanded I install Linux, any Linux, and make it work!

Well, she is to be feared, so I went to work erasing the drive while looking through Distrowatch looking for something to run on it, and in another tab I had a search engine looking for Linux that was friendly with Realtek. Then I remembered PC Linux. Downloaded the newest version of KDE, installed it, and everything worked out of the box. EVERYTHING! I was so impressed with the performance  and extra packages I am right now burning off all my files, tonight I erase, and tomorrow morning I will install PCLinuxOS KDE 2011.6, which I just downloaded. Tex, you never fail to impress me.

Magickman, glad to see you here! I moved to PCLinuxOS just like you because the hardware support is so good. My distro hopping days are behind me now.

Well, I tried the newest version, don't know if I burned it right, or got a bad download, and downloaded pclinuxos64-test04.iso  and installed it this morning. Tex, pay attention here. The "test" version installs without a hitch, and everything on it works. The best things is, it is smoking fast. Boots up in less that 15 seconds, shuts down in 12 seconds. Sure am happy you finally got around to converting packages to 64 bit, Tex. The only packages I use that are not in Synaptic is readahead, preload, and prelink. There may be more, these are the one I use that are not yet there.

As for the username, I got it from the Heart song of the same name, djohnston, you guessed it. I love that band. Have an autographed photo of Ann and Nancy hanging right above my monitor.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I am still running the 64 bit version, which is still classified as a test version, and it is running fast and stable.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned Windows user, scorned by Windows enough times to finally "get it".  That's why I ended up here myself. Smiley

Yep! You are tight there. My Queen (wife) is now running PCLinuxOS KDE on her Toshiba right now. She reports that is runs fast and stable, and the wireless connection is stronger than it ever was with Windows. Last night she was IM-ing with a friend, and was telling her how wonderful PCL is. I am certainly happy, I don't have that infernal laptop to work on every few days.

Well, after a video card failure, my PCL was all flashy using my onboard Nvidia setup, which had been giving me some problems. So I reinstalled, using the 32 bit version, and saving Home, and now it works great again. I was even able to get tinyproxy and tor configured and working right.
The latest Nvidia drivers seem to be stable and working fine. Too bad some of the other Linux distros cannot get their act together and include the drives like Texstar does.
