I had to sign in with my account. Should I have signed in with root? It says Forbidden. When I look for printers rather than trying to add them, it says no printers found.

I don't follow. After clicking on the Administration tab, click the Add Printer button. Enter root for the username, and root's password in the password box. If it's connected via USB, it should show up in local printers.

That was the problem then. I signed in with my user name, not as root.

How do I get out so that I can log in again as root?

Okay, I finally found the rpms buiried in the tarball. Sorry about that. According to Ken's Blog, install them in this order: cnijfilter-common_3.50-1_i386.rpm, then cnijfilter-mx880series_3.50-1_i386.rpm. If you can use your file browser to open a terminal, browse to the directory containing the rpms. Then use the file manager to open a terminal. Otherwise, open a terminal, then cd to the directory containing the rpms. In the terminal:

su
rpm -ivh cnijfilter-common_3.50-1_i386.rpm
rpm -ivh cnijfilter-mx880series_3.50-1_i386.rpm
exit
exit

The first exit command will end your root session. The second one will close the terminal. You will need to do the same with the scanner rpms, installing the common one first, then the mx880series one. Post back if you receive any errors.

I am having similar problems with a Canon PIXMAR MG5150 (which I won in a magazine competition)

Firstly, I downloaded the driver package from a Canon site and extracted them to /home/jim/Printer2

cnijfilter-common-3.40-1.i386.rpm,  cnijfilter-mg5100series-3.40-1-rpm

Then, in a terminal I typed su and entered my root password

rpm -ivh cnijfilter-common-3.40-1.i386.rpm
This brought the following response:
Preparing...                ########################################### [100%]
file /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocanonij from install of cnijfilter-common-3.40-1.i386 conflicts with file from package cnijfilter-common-2.70-1pclos2011.i586

I can understand that conflict as the cnijfilter-common-2.70-1pclos2011.i586 is in the repositories and is installed. I have also tried deleting cnijfilter-common-2.70-1pclos2011.i586 from the installed packages and installing cnijfilter-common-3.40-1.i386 in its place. No apparent change.

Next line was
rpm -ivh cnijfilter-mg5100series-3.40-1-rpm
This produced the following message:
error: not an rpm package
error: cnijfilter-mg5100series-3.40-1-rpm: not an rpm package (or package manifest): Is a directory

Where to now?
I have managed to get the printer working using the small "Woof woof" distro from Western Australia. I googled for the printer and came across a .pet driver for that distro. So, from a live CD of Puppy, I downloaded the .pet file and then was able to print a two word document. That isn't the ultimate solution for me as I wish to remain with PCLinuxOS.

That makes me think that a package request to PCLinuxOS head honchos for a driver for the Canon MG5100 series to be added to the repos might be the logical way to go.

Reactions please.

Jim

Nick,

I somehow missed this post until today. "Signing in", or logging in to a desktop session with your user name is what you should do. Then, start the CUPS interface in your web browser. When you are configuring your printer and are prompted for a username and password, enter root for the username and root's password.

You do realize that the 64-bit isos are still in a testing stage, don't you? The proper place for logging any problems with the 64 bit desktops is in the testing section of Google Groups. Please see this thread.

jimwilk,

cnijfilter-mg5100series-3.40-1-rpm is a folder. An rpm will end with .rpm. Open your file browser and locate the cnijfilter-mg5100series-3.40-1-rpm folder. You'll have to see what's inside the folder. If you're not sure what package to install next, please start a new thread, since you have a different model of printer. I don't have a Canon printer and have not looked at anything for your model of printer yet. If you do start a new thread, please point back to your post here.

I see you're running 32 bit, so no worries there. Congratulations on winning the magazine competition.
