synaptic was reloaded, but you know what, I was using PASS.  Maybe one does not use PASS for 64bit testing?  I didn't think and had just copied over my apt sources list from my main install.  Whatevs, I will check more diligently next time I install Testing to, well, test  Grin

i know its solved, but throwing this in for future reference

For linux I had to DISable "IEC958 Optical Raw" and ENable "Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack".    (when connecting s/pdif cable to a creative soundcard)
