removing a nonexistent soundcard(solved)

the second sound card is part of the nvidia video card, and probably isn't the cause of Pulse not being able to connect.

So as I was trying to get my pulse to play nice(connection refused) I found an extra sound card in the HW section. I went and disabled my hardware in the bios and restarted. Once logged in it asked me if it wanted me to forget permanently the hardware and I clicked yes (there were 3 here by the way, two intel_hda, and an Azalea SB_00) I said yes.
I went back into hardware and there is still an intel_HDA manufactured by nVidia.
This doesn't appear to function as such, but is just there.
lspci and dmidecode both see audio stuff, but im not 100% sure how to read it.
I run updated PClos 9_2011 KDE.
Propus 640 quad core with 4 gig running 800 MHZ, A740GM-M

The intel_hda sound is coming most likely from your video card like mine, check this post:

That is if your running an Nvidia video card.

Hello,
I ran into a little issue. Both cards seem to be using the HDA_intel module. I am fairly certain the "SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)" is the one I want to be using at the end of the day. It is also the one that comes as unkown under the sound config tab. I make this assumption based on two facts, the Intel high def lsited is made by invidia and is on the pciex us, whereas the azalia is on a pci bus. The second fat being that the azalia is made by ATI, which is in line with what is advertised as being my onboard audio.

Hi LSeraphim Have you looked in

Configure Your Desktop >> Hardware >> Multimedia > Phonon

as that may possibly give you an option to choose one

Awesome, I set the default device to the Azalia. I don't seem to have the speaker tab though.

I definitely appreciate the help. I can't get the pulse to connect. I suspect it is due to this extra audio device, and as far as getting alsa to spit of surround I am having less luck than I ever have.
However, I don't know if I should actually mark this as solved since the second sound card is still there and blacklisting doesn't appear to be an option.

PulseAudio just loves multiple audio devices so I doubt the presence of one would cause it any hassle unless there is a separate problem with the device.

Install PA Volume Control (pavucontrol)......  and in the Configuration tab there you can determine how your sound card behaves ....  any of them.

For instance I have the HDMI sound turned off there, which prevents any apps from trying to use it.

It also allows you to select which sound sink an application will send its sound to .....  any one of the sound cards fitted.

Also when recording it allows an easy method of recording from the sound stream going to a sound sink.

Quite a nifty piece of work IMO.
