There is indeed a problem presently with this combination of 810 graphics and 1366x768 resolution. I have met with it myself.
First ....  have you tried the alternative boot options such as failsafe graphics option?

Before going any further you need to try the other boot options.

If all else fails then the graphics can be configured to the correct resolution from the prompt on the black screen .....  but first try the other boot options.
If one of those brings you to the desktop the correct settings can be applied through PCC (Configure your computer) - Hardware - Graphics card

regards.

montee,

First of all, a warm welcome to this great forum from NZ

My laptop here is an Asus Pro 59 LE which has an Intel graphics card. I am using PCLinuxOS 2010.06 KDE. The resolution is 1366 X 768 and it is working perfectly.

In PC Control Center, I chose Configure Graphics Card.
In the first line it showed Graphics Card Intel 810 and later
Line 2 showed Monitor and I selected Flat Panel 1366 X 768
Line 3 showed Resolution. Clicking on that, I chose Other and then eventually
1366 X 768 24 bpp
Press Quit > Yes > OK. Then, I logged out to password login and back again. Resolution was fixed.

I hope this works for you. It should with that 810 card if it worked for me.
Edit: I may well have made these changes while using the Live CD and then went to install. I think that is correct but, it was a while back, so maybe I am wrong.

Good luck

Jim

Now I am confused .....  in your first post you say it goes to a "blank black screen" .....  yet by this reply you imply you can get to the Desktop to choose PCC.

Which is it?

More clarity is needed for us to know what you are doing and how and when it is failing.

If you are running from a livecd after changing the graphics driver you are advised to reboot .....  but doing so in a live session will discard the changes you made.
Instead of rebooting after making the changes, use Ctrl,Alt+Delete to restart the x-server and then log in again.

Alternatively, if you are running KDE in a live session, go into KDE CC, and in  Hardware - Display & Monitor - Size & Orientation  choose 1366x768 from the drop-down menu.

Unless you provide accurate information in your post we are unable to know what is happening.  Sad

ok let me explain...using yumi or unetbootin i got several options at boot so firstly i ran 'boot from this usb' ...it is this that brought on the black blank screen, as does choosing 'live cd' when you get the boot screen if you try to install from a cd....eventually by trial and error i get some kind of interactivity from the usb options if i choose 'safe mode'....the system tries to load up and the screen gets as far as 'localhost login' then pauses for awhile (in video safe mode it gets this far and stops dead)...then i get a blue background screen with some ms-dos typing which says 'x server unable to start graphical interface would you like to read output' or something similar...i then get a page of gobbldygook with 'exit' at the bottom...i press 'exit' get more of the same and theres another 'exit' at the bottom...when i press this i get a 'yes' or 'no' option which asks me to configure my graphics...so i press 'y' and then i get taken into something which looks like a bios options screen but only smaller....i get the option of 'graphics card' and there is mine, 'intel 810 or later' so i select that....then i get 'display' and clicking on that gives me a myriad of choices but i select 'flat panel generic 1366 x 768'......finally i get a choice for 'resolution', again lots more options but i select '1366 x 768 24bpp' or whatever it is...clicking on 'ok' i get the final 'do you want to keep these settings?' ...choosing 'y' i finally get 'x server will now try to start graphical interface' and away we go with a reboot....i know when it isn't going to work because i get to the 'localhost login' bit, the screen will flicker twice and then i get taken to a dialogue which says 'you need to configure your graphics would you like to do that now?' so i press 'y' and we go through the whole routine again with the same result...i have tried zillions of different options; i know that my graphics is intel 810 so i don't alter that in the options but i have tried different monitor choices and resolutions over and over again and i always always get the same result...'x server is unable' etc...i am now losing the will to live!

Thanks for the extra info ....  it is very important to know from what you were trying to boot ..... it would have made things easier to read if you had formatted your reply instead of running everything together ....  makes it very difficult for old eyes to read  Sad

choosing 'y' i finally get 'x server will now try to start graphical interface' and away we go with a reboot.

A reboot in a live session will always discard whatever changes have been made.

try this ....

use video safe mode

at the prompt log in as root user with password root

then enter

pcc

this brings you to the same set up you have described.

After you OK your resolution changes, and get back to the prompt enter

kde

That should bring you to the root user Desktop.

Let us know what happens.

If I were you, my next move might be to open up the Live CD and then go to PC Control Center using the usual root password.
Under Hardware > Configure Graphics Card, go through the procedure that I described in my earlier post.
Then don't reboot as you will lose your settings. Instead, choose Logout. Then when you log in under the user password you should find the desired resolution has been preserved. Don't reboot but go to  install PCLinuxOS and, hopefully, your problems should be at an end.

Good luck,

Jim

Okay, let's look at what you said earlier.

using yumi or unetbootin i got several options at boot so firstly i ran 'boot from this usb' ...it is this that brought on the black blank screen, as does choosing 'live cd' when you get the boot screen if you try to install from a cd.

Which is it, yumi or unetbootin? As I understand it, yumi is a Windows program that "can be used to create a Multiboot USB Flash Drive containing multiple operating systems, antivirus utilities, disc cloning, diagnostic tools, and more. Contrary to MultiBootISO's which used grub to boot ISO files directly from USB, YUMI uses syslinux to boot extracted distributions stored on the USB device, and reverts to using grub to Boot Multiple ISO files from USB, if necessary."

eventually by trial and error i get some kind of interactivity from the usb options if i choose 'safe mode'

Here is what the boot options are for the KDE MiniMe iso.

Which options do you see when you boot? Which options have you tried? We cannot see what you see. You have to be specific in saying not only what you see, but what choice(s) you make. No one can offer intelligent suggestions or advice if you see an elephant and describe a pillar or a rope.

the system tries to load up and the screen gets as far as 'localhost login' then pauses for awhile (in video safe mode it gets this far and stops dead)...then i get a blue background screen with some ms-dos typing which says 'x server unable to start graphical interface would you like to read output' or something similar...i then get a page of gobbldygook with 'exit' at the bottom.

If you are getting the "blue background screen", then you have almost successfully booted to a working desktop. The problem lies with the video driver, and the live CD is attempting to sort that out for you. Again, choosing which option gets you this far? If you get there again, choosing the vesa video driver will at least allow you to get to a desktop. Then you can work out the video options from there.

I can visualize what you are seeing, having seen it before. But you haven't said enough about what you are doing to get to that point. A "page of gobbledygook with 'exit' at the bottom" is not an accurate description.
