I have a 8 Gb Kingston DataTraveler memory stick that has worked very well on Windows machines. Now it contains about 4,5 Gb of all kinds of files.

When I connect this stick to my PCLOS machine, everything just stops! Dolphin comes up in about 20 seconds, the contents of this Kingston show up in about one minute. Copying and opening files takes FOREVER. The same happens with Krusader, just going up and down the directory tree takes a long time for every step, strangely also on other disks than Kingston.

I'm very fond of twin panel file managers, so I tried my old favorite MidnightCommander. Suddenly, this simple file manager works like a charm! Still, every movement in Dolphin and Krusader is painfully SLOW.

Why fast on only one file manager and slow on others? Is MidnightCommander using some older library routines or something simple that doesn't stick up? Do I blame KDE? I couldn't blame PCLOS, of course... Wink

Any suggestions?

Did you try opening Dolphin from a terminal to see if any errors showed when you accessed the device?

What does the output of

fdisk -l

give for the device?

Did you check the stick for any hidden files?

Dolphin starts from Konsole without error messages.

[risto@localhost KINGSTON]$ fdisk -l

doesn't give any output

What would this mean:

risto@localhost KINGSTON]$ fdisk -l .
last_lba(): I don't know how to handle files with mode 40755

As you can see, I don't know much about command line operation... how do I find the device Kingston?

Hi,

It is possible that the file system in your USB stick is corrupted. That can happen sometimes. Then the stick will be ok in one machine, not in the other and the behavior erratic. What about a backup and a fresh formatting ?

Just a thought - do you have Strigi (Nepomuk) indexing your files? Although it shouldn't (unless removable media has been set for indexing) it might be attempting to do so.  If you do have it enabled, mebbe try switching if off?

And I've read that sometimes KWin Desktop Effects can affect the access speed of external media (and on occasion internal drives as well)

Try the fdisk -l command as root to see what response you get. Wink

Copper,  try inserting the USB stick in one of the rear USB sockets where there is more current available.

YES!

Backup copy, reformat and copying all back again helped. I wish I knew what was the real fault. Some kind of FAT32 hiccup?

SOLVED, thanks!

Some Kingston sticks come with some hidden programs installed. These programs start up when you insert the stick. They are windows programs, so don't run on PCLinuxOS, but they do try to run. I have had 2 of these nuisancy things. Formatting to ext3 cured them for me. Cheesy

My companion's USB stick had a strange behavior in my machine recently, and not in his machine. It does not have any hidden file in it, he has used it for a long time now. His diagnostic has been "corrupted fs". I thought it might be the same story for Copper's USB stick so I suggested the idea. I am happy this could help.

I was not saying it was the hidden files that caused the problem. I was only saying that this had happened to me and was a possibility as the source of the problem. This does not in any way negate a corrupted file system as a possibility. Any road, the same 'fix' is used for either.

Yes, and a third possibility exists : both hidden file and corrupted fs. Smiley

(even if it seems less probable)

Sandisk sticks also come with that stupid U3 program which tries to run when plugged in.
