there is an ip address conflict with another system on the network ..

I asked this question on another forum and also thought that I would try to find an answer here.
Below is my situation:

I have two Desktop computers both Compaq, hardwired through a Netgear RP614 v2 (4port) router with the latest firmware.
The connection to the internet is through HiBeam internet which sends a wireless signal to a Modem mounted on my house.

The problem that I have is that I have occasional momentary power outages (2/3 times week - power blinks off then on)
The internet modem and the router both auto power back up and the computers stay off until manually powered back up.

When this happens and we power the computers back up the computer that runs Windows XP SP3 almost always gives an alert
of there is an ip address conflict with another system on the network ... and if I go into the control panel>network connections
and do a repair it almost always fails. On the other computer I am running PCLinux KDE 4.

I think that it is because the router is handing out the ip address's ahead of the computers booting up, but I could be wrong.
The Router and both computers are set to get IP address automatically and DHCP is enabled in the router.

Is there a way to assign a particular computer static IP and have the Router assign that ip to that same computer repeatedly ?

The router doesn't hand out any IP address till it is requested from the network upon boot or a renewal request is received.  It is most likely cause because windows being improperly shutting down, in this case loss of power. A easy fix would be set your Linux box for a static IP For example if you router network is in the 192.168.0.xxx to 192.168.0.255 I would setup my Linux box for a static IP of 192.168.0.200  This ip most likely would never be issued on a home network.

You could also do the same for your Windows box

I too have this problem at times with the power bumps.

It is generally not a problem anymore because I use a Linksys router running the Tomato firmware and set it up to assign all of my computers a static IP address using its DHCP server function.

This way, each time the system powers up, the DHCP server assigns each computer with the predefined IP address and name.

I downloaded the manual for your router and they refer to static IP addresses as address reservation.

So, you can download the manual from the following link and read the address reservation section and it will tell you how to solve the problem once and for all:

http://kbserver.netgear.com/pdf/rp614v2_reference_manual.pdf

Good luck.

Thanks ThirdOfSix,

I have saved a copy of the manual - and the Address Reservation should do the trick.

I knew that if I came here and posted my problem there would be someone smarter than me
come to my rescue.

Edit: Yes the Address Reservation in my Router did the trick - now every time the PC's are booted up
they get the same IP Address

Thanks Again
