The European Commission (EC) is to undertake its largest ever study into broadband speeds across the region to gain an insight into the work needed to reach its ambitious Digital Agenda targets.

The EC has set a goal of providing all citizens with 100Mbit/s connections by 2020, and is hoping to persuade 10,000 volunteers across 30 nations to send data on their broadband speeds.
The project will be run by UK firm SamKnows, which has already conducted similar studies with Ofcom in the UK and the Federal Communications Commission in the US.

The project is being run across all 27 member states plus Croatia, Iceland and Norway. Citizens wanting to take part can register at Samknows.eu.

Samknows

Volunteers will receive a purpose-built broadband measurement unit which can be plugged into the existing modem/router. This is called the SamKnows Whitebox.

If you are interested in helping us by hosting a SamKnows Whitebox, and playing a part in changing the face of the European broadband industry, then please sign up below!

It's worth taking the time to read through the requirements before proceeding.

Internet Observatory offers real-time IP traffic trends

A new website dubbed the Internet Observatory from German traffic management company  Ipoque,  offers real-time insights into what Internet users are doing online at any given time.

The idea behind the Internet Observatory, unveiled at the Broadband World Forum in Paris on Tuesday, is to show continent by continent how much traffic is caused by P2P; how Skype traffic fares against SIP traffic; and which Instant Messaging client generates the most traffic. The project is currently restricted to statistics from Europe, but real-time data for other continents as well as more in-depth statistics about each continent should to added soon, according to Ipoque.
