“This is not what 'logout' is supposed to mean - Facebook are only altering the state of the cookies instead of removing all of them when a user logs out.”

Whenever you visit a website that contains a “like” or “share” button – or any other Facebook app, your information including your account ID is sent back to Facebook, Mr Cubrilovic explained.

Google Chrome has created an app called Facebook Disconnect which removes the news ticker from your page when you use the Chrome web browser.

Firefox's “ShareMeNot” add-on also prevents third parties from tracking you until you actually click on the “like” or “share” button.

So what do you expect if you are dopey enough to sign up with FaceBook.

Facebook vows privacy fix 'in 24 hours'

Security consultant and blogger Nik Cubrilovic this afternoon told The Australian that Facebook had promised to revise its browser cookies so that they no longer collect identifiable information after a user had logged out.

Mr Cubrilovic said engineers at the social networking giant had made the commitment to him during a 40-minute conference call that ended early this afternoon.

He has spoken with US-based engineers and communication staff at Facebook during the call.

He said Facebook also had promised to address three other cookie-related issues during the call.

"They aim to fix it (the logout issue) by tomorrow," Mr Cubrilovic said.

"There will still be cookies, but they won't be identifiable. That's within 24 hours.

"We can only take them at their word."

I am not concerned.  I use Opera for my banking (cookies disabled) and Farcebook.  I use Firefox for everything else.

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/370201/facebook-admits-to-cookie-logout-bug

Facebook has made changes to the logout process and it has explained each part of the process and the cookies that the site uses in detail,” said Nik Cubrilovic on his blog. “The data shows that five cookies retained value after the logout procedure and a browser restart, while a further two survive the logout procedure and remain as session cookies.

”According to Cobrilovic, the most critical retained cookie was "a_user", which is the user's ID. “As of today, this cookie is now destroyed on logout,” he said.

According to Facebook, the remaining active cookies are necessary to make the network run smoothly and to protect against security threats.
