I have been running the 64 bit test release for about a week now and am amazed at how nice it is shaping up. I was never all that impressed with 64 bit systems but the PCLinuxOS test release has really changed my mind about 64 bit. Memory use is very good considering this is 64 bit with KDE and it runs very smooth. The things I use day to day work great and I have not had any real problems with the test release and I am very happy running this. The 64 bit release is looking very good and I sure do appreciate all the hard work that is going into making this edition.

PCLinuxOS: A revolution in personal computing

Yup - and it seems that every app will be true 64-bit except Skype which runs with the help of an ia-32 library. So it's looking good!

Yes, it's uber good but with the superb work being done on it I'm not surprised!

Just installed the Test4 iso and as usual it went without a hitch.

Only about 5,000 packages to go...........

Got a new mobo that has this stinky little message about incompatibility every time I boot 32-bit PCLinuxOS, so I decided to give 64 bits a whirl. It is unbelievably screaming fast, and no more stinky message.

I am now waiting with bated breath for the repo to be filled in so I can quit having Win7 marked as the default OS to boot...  Tongue

I am still on Test3 as it has my packaging environment but I am sure that Test4 is even better as Tex crafts it to his meticulous likings. I will reinstall to Test4 as soon as I've done my last batch of packages. I have to tell you that it is not easy and with Tex screening and rebuilding the remaining 5K packages himself, we still have some time before the KDE 64-bit repository goes on par with the 32-bit.

For every 20 app/lib I try to package, I only get 50% success - and those that fail to build properly are mainly due to unavailable dependencies that needed to be rebuilt first ... some maybe needed to change their make manifest. If we have three or four Texstar, it would be a very good thing but since we only have the one and only, we'd have to make do. Patience ... good things come to those who can wait.

50% is good, Archie, under the circumstances.

If only I was a quarter as efficient as Tex...

A reinstall to Test4 translates to reinstalling all the libs already installed that were necessary for a build. Still nothing like a good clean start. I'll do it on the coming week. China is on a week-long National Day holiday and it doesn't look like were going anywhere ... it's getting real cold here now.

Cheesy A clean/fresh start can be a good thing. It's like cooking. If you start with fresh ingredients.........
