Dual monitor problem

Well then, I have a nvidia geforce 6800 with both vga and dvi ports. I currently have two monitors hooked up. When I start up the computer both monitors work fine, the bootlog, all the sys info as it starts up shows on both screens. as soon as it hits the login screen however it goes to a single screen. in the gui, when i go to the settings It shows only one monitor in the hardware-display and monitor-size and orientation.
I have attempted to configure my video card from the "configure your computer" interface and have enabled the dual monitor option but to no avail.
any ideas???

are you using kde4?

there is a menu that enables clone mode in configure your desktop icon

since you have a nvidia, i am not sure if you need to change something on the config menu of the driver

where is said menu?
i have looked and seen nothing thats says enable clone mode in any logical place

if on kde4, in the taskbar(can't remember, my desktop is really modified) press the two tools button called configure your desktop

in that window open/hardware/display and monitor/size and orientation

there should be listed the vga and dvi and any other output detected

enable them as required, the other menu that says multiple monitors offers more options

of course this depends on the driver, i think that nvidia offers other options

And such is the problem- although my pc clearly recognizes both monitors and uses them as it boots up, as soon as it gets to the gui it does not use both. and in the hardware/display and monitors/size and orientation It does not list both outputs it only shows one-

then you need to play with the driver installed or with the options of that driver, i can't help you because i don't have similar hardware and my machines uses free drivers that doesn't need much configuration

lets wait for someone with more experience to guide you on how to set the nvidia driver

I have used Nvidia cards (including the one you mention), with dual monitors for years, of recent times I find the best way is to use "NVIDIA Display Settings" under "Configuration" in the "More Applications" menu. For me it always seemed to work best setting it up and saving as Root.

It has just worked for so long now I can't remember how I got the display settings setup installed (I have just drunk wine and I'm working like your monitor - only half there) but I assume it came with the driver............. sigh :-) ?
