Please let us know how it goes for you.  I got a Linksys WRT54GL that I am going to have to do before long.

I will let you know how it comes out. I thought I was going to have time to do it yesterday but it looks like I might have to wait until the weekend.
The firmware is available for my model router so it looks like if I just do that right then it should work.
I will give the results as soon as I know.
Thank you.

Just fyi, my take on dd-wrt:

I have several routers that I've flashed with dd-wrt. It has never given me control options that I didn't already have with the OEM interface; really, it is kinda like the difference between KDE and Gnome, afaic. It does, however, make many things easier, as it almost always has a much better set of task-specific help and info files than provided by the OEMs. As far as activity monitoring, there is no contest, dd-wrt wins that hands down. However, I've always taken the time to read and digest everything I could BEFORE flashing, because many times the OEM provided some insight I didn't see in dd-wrt - I'm just an information junkie.

Flashing can sometimes be a challenge by itself, too. For my last router, I had to do some searching to find that I needed to use a hex editor to edit the last line of the dd-wrt firmware before it would "take". It is invariably worth the trouble to me, though, and whenever possible I'll continue to use it.

As far as your original question, joechimp, I'm following this thread just to see if you have any questions I can answer after you make the attempt to set up your repeater. It's a hands-on learning experience that no one can really tell you how to do, and until you have a specific problem, all I can tell you is to do what I did - follow the routers' manuals and help files.

I just wanted to tie up a few things and thank all those that helped me here. I had to put off doing the dd-wrt as I dropped the router upside down off my desk and it didn't like that so it is being stubborn like not working right.

It's too bad because it would have been good experience to get this to work. I still might do it but haven't had the time to see if I can get the router working.

I think I am just going to buy a range extender and be done with it. It's worth it for free wifi. The building might get around to getting their own repeaters set up but I doubt that will happen soon.

So again thank you all. I will post back if I should do something with the router. Also results of the range extender if I buy one.

Thank you. Smiley
