I have a Toshiba Satellite L505-12Q laptop which uses the Realtek 8192SE Wireless Adapter. When I installed Phoenix 2011.07, the adapter was recognized but couldn't find any wireless network. I got it working by downloading and compiling the corresponding driver from the Realtek website.
Is there anything else I must do now? For example, uninstall the default driver or something like that? I searched but I cannot find any posts related to 8192se problems. In PCLinuxOS hardware database, the entry for this adapter says:
RTL8192se
PCLinuxOS Version: 2010 Desktop Environment: KDE 4.6 Other Comments: Known problems or issues: None
Is it only me that had the problem? Did I do something wrong?

I don't have the adapter you mention, but wireless is often a hit and miss issue with Linux and certain chipsets I find. My Atheros based wireless for my EeePC is fine - no problems at all, but my Belkin dongle (rt2500usb) is terrible - it drops connections at will, fails to connect half the time at all, lousy signal strength..... In my experience, the issues with my dongle have been independant of distro or kernel and whether I use the kernel included module, the previous module which had to be added manually or even the official driver from the manufacturer, it has been a pain. It works in that other OS (the popular one from Redmond) - I installed that some time back to simply test the dongle and it worked fine (Windows removed afterwards). I guess the first thing is to give some more info - stuff like whether you are using some form of security on your wireless network (e.g WEP, WPA etc) and it might also be worth giving the info about your wireless from lsmod (to see if the driver you compiled is being used or if you are trying to use the one from the kernel). Blackilsting the old driver is easy enough to do, but it is worth seeing what is happening first. To temporarily remove the module - assuming it is being installed and perhaps causing confusion - simply become the "root" or "superuser" with the command su followed by your root password, then type in rmmod nameofthe module and hit enter. We can go into the permanent blocking of the driver with blacklisting if needs be later. By the way, it may be useful to have a look at the sticky about wireless issues which can be found at http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,56672.0.html

In my Toshiba L555D laptop it works OK. What kernel are you running? If it's a pre 2.6.38.xx kernel, then you have to use the dkms driver package through Synaptic and install it. It's better to get the latest 2.6.38.xx kernel with the built-in driver because there are some issues with earlier kernels supporting this module, although I didn't have any problems. When you install the 2.6.38 kernel it will remove the dkms driver and built modules from previous kernels you already have.

First of all thank you for your answers! The kernel I'm using is 2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs. My wireless network uses WPA2 encryption and I've set manual IP address, domain name, gateway and DNS servers. I had no disconnects or other problems since I installed the driver from Realtek. The only problem was that, without this driver, the wireless adapter was recognized by the OS but no wireless networks were showing (like scanning wasn't working). The lsmod command returns these results: Module Size Used by snd_usb_audio 70631 0 snd_usbmidi_lib 15440 1 snd_usb_audio snd_rawmidi 15287 1 snd_usbmidi_lib michael_mic 1678 4 cryptd 6989 0 aes_i586 6948 1 aes_generic 25998 1 aes_i586 af_packet 17321 2 arc4 1126 2 ecb 1645 2 ipv6 266689 16 snd_hda_codec_hdmi 20480 1 snd_hda_codec_realtek 226487 1 rfcomm 30279 4 snd_hda_intel 19109 5 snd_hda_codec 66310 3 snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_intel sco 7499 2 snd_hwdep 4820 2 snd_usb_audio,snd_hda_codec snd_seq_dummy 1135 0 snd_seq_oss 25264 0 snd_seq_midi_event 4648 1 snd_seq_oss snd_seq 42136 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event snd_seq_device 4457 4 snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq snd_pcm_oss 33854 0 uvcvideo 55339 0 bnep 8483 2 r8192se_pci 461485 0 sr_mod 13510 0 cdrom 31506 1 sr_mod snd_pcm 60446 5 snd_usb_audio,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_pcm_oss snd_timer 15383 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm snd_mixer_oss 12981 2 snd_pcm_oss snd 43189 23 snd_usb_audio,snd_usbmidi_lib,snd_rawmidi,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mixer_oss soundcore 5025 2 snd snd_page_alloc 5877 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm r8169 34277 0 videodev 56533 1 uvcvideo mii 3382 1 r8169 l2cap 39423 16 rfcomm,bnep sg 23483 0 i2c_i801 7002 0 cfg80211 126787 1 r8192se_pci i2c_core 16500 2 videodev,i2c_i801 iTCO_wdt 9145 0 iTCO_vendor_support 1585 1 iTCO_wdt binfmt_misc 5850 1 yenta_socket 19176 0 pcmcia_rsrc 8880 1 yenta_socket pcmcia_core 10281 2 yenta_socket,pcmcia_rsrc cpufreq_ondemand 7592 2 cpufreq_conservative 7612 0 cpufreq_powersave 714 0 acpi_cpufreq 5117 1 freq_table 2087 2 cpufreq_ondemand,acpi_cpufreq mperf 1003 1 acpi_cpufreq nvram 4805 0 firewire_ohci 25329 0 firewire_sbp2 11541 0 firewire_core 43040 2 firewire_ohci,firewire_sbp2 crc_itu_t 1103 1 firewire_core fuse 59455 3 dm_mod 58938 0 fglrx 2547889 80 btusb 9833 2 bluetooth 51698 9 rfcomm,sco,bnep,l2cap,btusb sparse_keymap 2484 0 joydev 7663 0 toshiba_bluetooth 1630 0 rfkill 12694 3 cfg80211,bluetooth video 10008 0 battery 8843 0 button 4021 1 fglrx processor 22399 3 acpi_cpufreq evdev 7275 17 ac 2545 0 ata_piix 18602 0 ahci 17997 2 libahci 16163 1 ahci libata 154591 3 ata_piix,ahci,libahci sd_mod 31682 3 scsi_mod 150520 5 sr_mod,sg,firewire_sbp2,libata,sd_mod crc_t10dif 1104 1 sd_mod ext4 312169 1 jbd2 59959 1 ext4 crc16 1099 2 l2cap,ext4 uhci_hcd 19499 0 ohci_hcd 19566 0 ehci_hcd 35439 0 usbhid 31267 0 hid 63565 1 usbhid usbcore 117639 9 snd_usb_audio,snd_usbmidi_lib,uvcvideo,btusb,uhci_hcd,ohci_hcd,ehci_hcd,usbhid

agmgAt a quick glance this all looks reasonable, my work on the driver goes back some time, so I need a bit of relearning . Next can you show content of the two following statements, normal user should be fine in konsole: lspci -vnn modinfo rtl8192se In the following you need to be in a root konsole, the first statement updates your database the next nice lot of information about rtl8192: [root@localhost gert]# updatedb .. [root@localhost gert]# locate rtl8192

For some reason, I can't "code" these lines. Reply won't send if I insert "code"

agmgI am not sure but perhaps you have hit a limit of number of characters allowed within code, but I can confirm that on my MiniMe system if I try to insert your content in code, the server closes me down. Somebody else may be able to tell us what this is, I have an idea. Well the number of lines did surprise me, as I checked on this system I am using, turning my wireless connection on and doing a quick seach using locate. I have another driver but I took a guess that yours would not be too far out in number of lines, but I was wrong. I have better summarise for myself because this little 'pushover' is laughing at me. 1.. Toshiba Satellite L505-12Q laptop 2.. Installed Phoenix 2011.07, amount of customisation=? 3.. 14:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8191SEvB Wireless LAN Controller [10ec:8172] (rev 10) Kernel driver in use: rtl8192se Kernel modules: r8192se_pci, rtl8192se 4.. Driver/Module from Realtek installed from outside Synaptic (because original die not scan/pickup) 5.. Not clear to me if "dkms" from synaptic has been installed, dkms-r8192SEdkms package for r8192se driver This package contains the r8192se driver for Realtek RTL8191SE/RTL8192SE WiFi cards. Please confirm by going to Synaptic and search on dkms-r8192se and that it is installed. If that is the case and you have an "outside" driver I am getting very cautious and will change procedure. Since I am running MiniMe I will also change to Phoenix later if needed. I don't have the 2011.07 yet, I will download ISO now in preparation.

I will check it when I get back home later this evening (I'm at work now) If that is the case and you have an "outside" driver I am getting very cautious and will change procedure. Since I am running MiniMe I will also change to Phoenix later if needed. I don't have the 2011.07 yet, I will download ISO now in preparation. Smiley You shouldn't have got into so much trouble for me! Thanks for all your efforts I am sure than when you figure this out, you will provide some more info about what's going on because I really like to learn more, won't you? My wireless adapter is recognized as 8191SEvB... but in Windows is showing as 8192SE (so was to a couple other distros). All this info above is about 8192SE...

dkms-r8192se is not required for kernel 2.6.38.x because it comes with the kernel. The firmware is missing on the Phoenix LiveCD.
