I am trying to install a Brother rpm printer driver using the code below after doing an "su root" and "cd /home/bruce" with "ls" showing mfcj6510dwcupswrapper-1.1.1-1.i386.rpm and mfcj6510dwlpr-1.1.1-1.i386.rpm being  there.

rpm -ihv --nodeps mfcj6510dwlpr-1.1.1-1.i386.rpm

and keep coming up with this error:

error: failed to stat /home/bruce/.gvfs: Permission denied
Preparing...                ########################################### [100%]
   package mfcj6510dwlpr-1.1.1-1 is already installed

Trying the cupswrapper.rpm gives the same results.

I've done this same type of install before with an MFC-490 by Brother with no problems.

Any idea what's going on and how I can fix it? I'm fairly new to Linux and having to code like this in a terminal, so go easy and speak dummy, OK? LOL.

Thanks,
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

Have you checked in the repos using Synaptic as I believe there are Brother drivers ready to install?

Do a Reload when Synaptic is first opened as that will refresh all the apps for you.

Welcome to the forum as well.

Hi Bruce,

Welcome to the forum as well.

I've reloaded the repos, and then checked what was there. It's showing the drivers as being there, after telling them to remove them and applying, it doesn't shoew them as being available any more. I can only assume that it registered them as being there because I had tried to install them directly.

Searching the repos for "Brother" only brings up limited choices.. no of which are MFC's.

Also, I don't see the MFC as a choice in the network, ads I'm trying to install it as a wireless unit.

Seems like everything after the Fail to stat error is being at least partially ignored somehow.

Any other suggestions?

Bruice

Got my Brother printer installed from a terminal in the root account.
Cups should be installed and running before running the rpm's
In the termnal:
rpm -i TheBrother.rpm
and the seccond one.
Reboot.
Check in PCC if the printer is installed.
