I tried the other boot options.  In each case the message 'cannot open file delete' and the boot stanza were displayed, then nothing.

At at time of "nothing" do you see your keyboard led flashing ?

You need to delete the "quiet" boot option if present, to see the messages displayed (as well as the splash boot option).

Was the "quiet" boot option present during your tests?

Thanks.

1.  I didn't notice the keyboard led flashing
2.  I will amend the menu.lst file for sda9 by deleting 'quiet' in each option.  Removing 'quiet' and changing to 'splash-verbose' made no difference when using the default boot option previously.

I will report back later.  Thanks again for your help.

I deleted 'quiet' from the two stanzas and tried using both.  The last lines of the feedback were:

Code:
creating /dev
trying to use devtmpfs (ignore errors)
_ [flashing]

The system did NOT boot.  No led flashing on the keyboard.

There are some more threads with the same situation which might also be helpful.

Ctl + alt +F7 did nothing that I could see but, after a significant wait, the process continued.  I had to select a time zone and enter a root password.  It seems that mylivecd is working differently now.
