Openbox Desktop

All about the PCLinuxOS Openbox 2011.08 desktop

Release Date: 08-19-2011
Size: 683MB
Md5Sum: 6b6f2fef62875d8604d45183ae2a40ff
Produced by: Melodie
User Level:  Intermediate, Advanced

Info:
Openbox is an extremely fast-performing and energy-saving desktop environment. Openbox is not a desktop manager, it is a window manager with extended features. But with the addition of a few small programs, a full desktop is achieved. It is also unique as a “stand-alone” Openbox version thanks to openbox-menu. This small program  allows you to have Openbox right-click menus which are dynamically reloaded each time you add or remove a program, as does any full desktop with a task panel and program menu launcher. The standard Openbox installation does not provide these capabilities. Openbox uses less CPU and less RAM than other environments. It is especially suited for cloud computers with low hardware specifications, such as netbooks, mobile devices (e.g. MIDs) or older computers. It is also well-suited to modern computers with fast CPUs and lots of RAM. You can install your favorite programs in an environment that leaves more of the computer's resources available for CPU and memory-hungry applications.

Features:

Kernel
2.6.38.8-bfs kernel for maximum desktop performance.

Full Openbox Desktop.
Nvidia and ATI fglrx driver support.

Thank you for the announcement!  Looks very sweet !

I see the mini version uses tint2 .  While this is a nice panel I found LXPanel just as light with even more feature I personally care about.  Maybe a consideration for the future.

Where can I find the download links to PCLinuxOS Openbox?

The mirrors right here on PCL Main Page have two current versions, Bonsai and full,
the education version is on http://tyruiop.eu/~melodie/Downloads/ISOS/PCLinuxOS_En_2011/

Edit: the most recent edu version appears at http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,94160.msg813933.html#msg813933.   Should fit on a CD.

Hi,

PCLinuxOS Openbox full and mini "Bonsai" can be found on mostly all mirrors, which means any link taken from your Synaptic/apt-get sources.list will do it. Here is a list, I didn't check them all:
http://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/pclinuxos/live-cd/
http://ftp.nl.freebsd.org/pub/os/Linux/distr/pclinuxos/live-cd/
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/live-cd/
http://ftp.yz.yamagata-u.ac.jp/pub/linux/pclinuxos/live-cd/
http://ftp.nluug.nl/ibiblio/distributions/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/live-cd/
http://ftp.belnet.be/mirror/pclinuxonline.com/live-cd/
http://ftp.sh.cvut.cz/MIRRORS/pclinuxos/live-cd/
http://na.mirror.garr.it/mirrors/pclinuxos/live-cd/
http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/live-cd/
http://debian.ethz.ch/mirror/pclinuxos/live-cd/
http://ftp.ch.debian.org/mirror/pclinuxos/live-cd/
http://ftp.nl.freebsd.org/os/Linux/distr/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/live-cd/

http://ftp.vim.org/ibiblio/distributions/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/live-cd/

http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/live-cd/
http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/pclinuxos/live-cd/
http://ftp-srv2.kddilabs.jp/Linux/packages/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/live-cd/
http://kambing.ui.ac.id/pclinuxos/live-cd/

Look if the size is correct and if the md5sum is correct, I found a mirror where the size of the full Openbox is obviously lower than what it should be. Full version is 683MB.

The PCLinuxOS Education second August version is going through a few final tests, and will be announced in the News and Announcements too, in it's own thread. That one version will not be mirrored by the official repository.

Mélodie

http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/live-cd/

The above mirror probably is the fastest in regards to the most current iso.   Some have
the larger iso which I don't think we really want.   Although both are working OK.

FYI

The 682, almost 683 MB iso is very handy too, when you want to get the full system installed fast and running out of the box. And if you want to go further in removing packages after you will have uninstalled all the drivers you don't need, or replacing the default apps with others, and if you are also already used to the Bonsai version, you can get a list of the installed packages in each, do a "sort", a "diff" and have a look at that diff to help you go further.

There are PCs on the market without optical drives.

I believe you do yourself a disservice putting in this as a requirement.

Lots of users generate liveUSB using various tools running on differing OSs. Presumably Openbox Edition can be used by such tools to generate a liveUSB.

Just19, you are perfectly right.

Johnston, could you add "or a PC which can boot from USB" or something like that ?

Thanks,
Mélodie

PS: Just19, do you by any mean have any machine that don't boot to usb, and have a floppy drive where you could test a tool meant to turn around the usb non bootable question ? I think about plop boot manager and such. Several tools of this type are made available by slitaz under the shape of an img file to be put in a 1.44 MB floppy disk...

I have never had the opportunity to test this, and would really like to know if that really works. Smiley

I am sure I have such a machine here ...  maybe several.
I used to use a floppy years ago to boot other media ......  which I think included USB devices.
I have not looked at this for quite some time, and will not have an opportunity to fire up an old machine in the coming week or ten days.

After that I expect to be able to test whatever scheme you wish .....  maybe you could remind me in a week or 10 days - if that is suitable ?

Just19, I am not sure I will still think about it in one week or ten days. I think about it once a while only. Therefore I give you the direct link to the file now. It is here. It looks like an "easy" way to me. Else, I had before tried to get into plop boot manager doc, but could not figure out where to start. And the floppy includes other small programs too, which can be interesting.

Well, that was "lifted" directly off the LXDE announcement page @ http://www.pclinuxos.com/?page_id=188.

I've amended the Openbox announcement. By the way, I see no Openbox links in the "Get PCLinuxOS" section on the main page @ http://www.pclinuxos.com/.

I don't either. Maybe will it be later ?
Could I suggest you add a few links at the end of the presentation, for the downloads ?

I had a look at the file you linked to, created a floppy with it, but saw no real reason to use it.

It uses Plop boot manager, which can be written to a floppy without all the SLITAZ  stuff cluttering it up.

So if interested I would suggest Plop .....  I tested it on a PC here but not on an old PC .....  but it should work there too.
If I remember I will get one of the old machines out to try it on when I get time.

Hope that is useful.

regards.
