Yes, I see now. then close the control center complety and open Konsole:
PCLinuxOS Menu -> More Applications -> Terminals -> Konsole

EDIT: then type su - <ENTER> followed by your root password when requested, <ENTER>

type (copy & paste, this time should work  Cheesy  ) the following commands:

chkconfig ip6tables off

I do believe that you don't share your files across the network, in this case you can disable the following services: copy and paste, because are not needed:

chkconfig nfs-common off
chkconfig nfs-server off

I had never thought of turning off the ObexFtp service, good one! I have plenty of RAM in my system but am always looking for ways to tweak things out for better performance. Nice thread and topic!  Grin

my fault ms_meme, please delete your latest post.

before to copy and paste the command you need to type su - and when asked your root password, followed by ENTER  Grin
only at this point you can copy the commands. Sorry!  Embarrassed

I did the first command as su and nothing appeared after ENTER but a new su line.  I take it I am to just enter the next command and ENTER and then do the 3rd command?

Yes, I have put in my su password and have entered the 1st command you gave me and ENTER.  I get this:

[meme@localhost ~]$ su
Password:
[root@localhost meme]# chkconfig ip6tables off
[root@localhost meme]#

What I want to know...is this right?  And now do I just enter the 2nd command you gave me and ENTER  and then do the 3rd one?

When I saw that there wasn't a long list of something when I ENTERED, I didn't want to do anything else until I was sure.

It's all OK ms_meme, please enter the other two commands, and then a third one:

free

please report back the ouput of the latest.

OK, don't worry about the warnings.

please type the following commands, and try to copy all output (you need to scroll up and mark all text ... possibly)

A last thing for today, at least for me because it's very late night here (or very early morning  Grin )

please close all applications, reboot the computer in Linux, and as first thing open a Konsole and type in again the command:

free

OK ms_meme,
right now you have approx 300 Mb for applications, please try to use no more then 2/3 apps at once, tomorrow (or when you prefer) we will continue with others tricks, in the meantime we have some data to look at.

(next candidate look like to be squid).

How much swap do you have? Are you using it much?

Check your swappiness.

Code:
$ cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness

If your swappiness returns a 0, then you're not using it much.

I would think that somewhere between 70 to 85 would be ideal for you. But do let others concur to this suggestion.

Code:
# echo 75 > /proc/sys/vm/swappiness

I hope that could be of help, ms_meme.
