Please help! I can no longer boot to windows vista

Hello,

I hope someone here can help. I installed PCLinuxOS as a dual boot on a windows vista computer. Everything seemed normal and the graphic grub shows a WindowsRE option but upon selection I get the following message:

root (hd0,1)
error 22: no such partition

I checked in gparted and I can see the partition without problem and is flagged as boot. I can also mount it in dolphin and see some files so the partition is not empty.

I have never had this problem but I have never done an install on a Vista system (XP and Win7 only). A google search seems to indicate that windows needs to be assigned to (hd 0,0) but I have no idea how to do this.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated

Yup, you need to edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst, as root, to change the root (hd0,1) line in the Windows stanza to root (hd0,0). Save the file, and reboot.

I have done that and now I get a message saying BOOTMGR is missing. How/where do I re-install it?

P.S. The computer is also turning off instead of suspending when I close the lid. I have no idea of what to search for here. Any pointers are also very much appreciated

From Linux, mount the Windows partition and check to see what partition your Windows boot.ini is trying to boot from.

Also, there is no data to be lost in this computer so perhaps re-installing vista would be expedient. I assume I can burn a cd from the recovery iso file in linux and re-install. Is this correct? These are the contents of the iso folder:

Do you have a Windows installation CD? If so, boot the disk and enter the recovery console, then run the fixmbr and fixboot apps from there. If Windows then boots, you'll need to reinstall grub to the MBR. That's the easy part... we can guide you with that.

What worries me is that your Windows partition seems to be labelled "WinRE", which suggests to me it is a recovery partition rather than a working Windows. What did you delete to make room to install pclos on the disc? Things get more complicated if you've managed to wipe Windows, though still soluble.

If you haven't got an installation disc you can download an evaluation ISO of a server version of Windows from the MS website and burn it to a DVD. You won't want to install it but it should have the recovery console etc on it.
