The truth is out there ... PCLinuxOS!

« on: August 14, 2011, 02:06:52 PM »

Ok PCLinuxOS Forum members,

We at The PCLinuxOS Magazine need your help.

We need someone who can help or take over the production of the HTML version of the magazine.

Formerly, gseaman was our "HTML guy" for nearly two years, but he had to step aside due to job commitments. Then, Sproggy took over the production of the HTML version of the magazine. But now, due to a new (and much better) job, he won't have the time to do it all himself.

Soooooo ... we are seeking someone who can help Sproggy produce the HTML every month.

What's involved/needed:

* Working knowledge of HTML (experience preferred, but not required ... we CAN train you)

* Ability to work "under deadline" (we like to release the magazine as close to the first of the month as possible)

* Someone who works well with others (myself, Meemaw, Sproggy, the rest of the mag staff)

* Someone with a dependable network connection

* Articles are "grabbed" from Google Docs and converted to the HTML, so access to Google sites is mandatory.

* Someone who can take direction well (sorry, no loose canons)

* Someone to join the magazine's mailing list on Google Groups (it's how we share the articles for editing)

* Someone who can/does use Dropbox, since some parts of the magazine are shared that way for production.

* Someone who (preferably) has some graphics skills.

"Crunch time" every month is the last 8-10 days of every month, when we "lock" the magazine articles and the final production/assembly of the magazine's PDF and HTML versions take place. The amount of time this task takes every month is highly dependent on the size of the magazine, how dedicated you are to getting it done, and (of course) your HTML skill level (which should cause the amount of time it takes each month to decrease over time, as you discover ways to streamline the tasks).

You will, of course, receive guidance and assistance from Sproggy, as well as me (the Chief Editor) and Meemaw (Asst. Editor).

If you are able to assist with this monthly endeavor, please send me an email at pclinuxos.mag $AT$ gmail $dot$ com. You can also send me a PM here on the forum.

Whomever you are, we look forward to working with you!

Thanks!

Since my html skills are shoddy at best and useless most of the time I will not present you with all the headaches  of training a noob.

I do, however, really hope and urge everybody reading above and filling the job description to come forward and fill the gap.  The PCLinuxOS Magazine is one of the best if not the best distro mag out there - it should be everybody's goal to be part of such an accomplished setup.

So - we are waitin' ....  Cheesy

I have made this website from scratch: http://www.tec-zone.de (a little outdated as you see).

And I did do this to use it someday: [img=http://s1.postimage.org/23dhghnk4/Logo_Startseite.jpg]

So XHTML 1.1 and CSS 2 as well as basic graphics are no complete mistery to me. But I never digged into JavaScript or Java so far. How much of that might be needed?

Of course the time necessary will depend on skill level, but to get an idea, how much time did gseaman and Sproggy invest for the task? I'm travelling rather frequently, so I might or might not be able to deliver on time.

Should I apply?

Go for it, aguila. I wish I could do it as well but I already failed on a couple of the requirements.

* Someone with a dependable network connection

* Articles are "grabbed" from Google Docs and converted to the HTML, so access to Google sites is mandatory.

* Someone who can/does use Dropbox, since some parts of the magazine are shared that way for production.

Should I apply?

Definitely. It could be fun Wink

aguila,

I don't believe java or javascript skills are needed. But, parnote will set me straight if I'm wrong.

I'm not positive, but it seems that Sproggy and gseaman started the html after the final date for articles to be finished each month (usually around the 20th) and had the html version ready to be released at the same time that parnote and I finished the pdf (as close to the 1st as we can).... so about 10 days. We allow for that much time because we all have jobs and families and other commitments... and generally can get the magazine finished in our leisure time.

(I like your site too!!!)

Hope that answers your questions..... and yes, feel free to apply!!!

I would like to help out!  I have a background in programming and web development ( although it's been several years since I actually coded). I don't know that I could take on the whole thing myself each and every month, but I'd be more than happy to coordinate with others and help out.

Finally someone.

I can help out, too. Little experience, but still better than nothing. If we share the job, we should be able to get it done on time even if one of us will be more busy at a given time.

As I'm travelling a lot, I didn't want to take over the whole job as I never know if I will have access and time where I am after the 15th of every month.

Sproggy, Pc_Mojo, what do you think?

That's what I was thinking as well. It would be easier to spread over a few people and have a few people trained. Then if someone is busy, the others could take over for the month.

@Everyone. When I stepped out, I offered to help Sproggy figure out my workflow. He picked it right up and didn't need to ask any questions. I am still here and able to answer questions. There is only two lines of javascript, one for the hit counter and one for the google search. I am not a javascript coder, I just cut and pasted the code and it worked! Wink

The biggest part of the job is getting each article prepped. There is such a large volume of excellent content! I tried to make inserting the articles into templates the easy part.

@Sproggy. Thanks for your contributions!

@Parnote. It was fabulous working with you and I hope to be able to get time to contribute again in the future. My first issue with the magazine was January, 2007! Wink

@Galen: It was equally a pleasure working with you! I do hope that we will get to work together in the future.

@Sproggy: ah, you already know!  Wink

@everyone else: I appreciate those who have stepped forward to help out. Please bear with us while we work on getting the September issue out, and then Sproggy will get y'all up to speed on what needs to be done. As gseaman has noted, he is also available to help field questions. I'm sure "we'll" be in touch, and I look forward to working with each and every one of you!
