Can't find any advice on this. Maybe I'm using the wrong search words.
Does anyone have any advice on whether or not it is a good idea to leave your laptop with Lithium ion battery plugged in all the time that power is available? My Li-ion powered tool manual says it is OK to leave unused battery on the charger indefinitely. Can the same be said for laptops?
Thanks
Hello bilyo,
If you want to avoid trashing your battery like 90% of all laptop batteries - then charge it fully, remove the battery and pop it in a sealed plastic bag and store it in the door of your fridge at 5 DegC.  Only put the battery in your laptop if you plan to travel or use the laptop disconnected from mains supply. (most laptops are used mostly on mains supply)
The battery runs at about 40 DegC + inside a laptop and will degrade ~ 30% per year.  Stored, charged in the fridge door it should retain 95% capacity per year!  Some of my clients use their laptop+battery as a substitute UPS.  Most users aren't quite so critical.  YMMV.

The clowns? Oh, yeah, the clowns. We fight them too; entire armies, spilling out of Volkswagens. We do our best to fight them off, but they keep sending `em in.

He just means that if the power goes off while you're using your laptop, the battery will take over.  If your place is prone to unexpected power outages, a laptop is a life saver.
