Is anyone using an ATI Radeon HD 5750 in PCLinuxOS 2011.6? My Dad replaced the graphics card in his computer and gave me the ATI card for free! I am wondering if this card is going to work out of the box for me and if full screen flash will work alright with it. I am currently using NVidea 6150 on-board graphics and it works fine but the card my Dad gave me looks like a pretty awesome piece of hardware. I can't beat free and I would like to use it if it will work alright with the new xserver packages. I did a forum search but have not found anything about this particular graphics card. Is anyone using an ATI HD 5750 with good results?

just comparing the onboard to the ati, your jump will give you at least 4 times more gpu power

not much linux users have ati cards on their desktops, ati is not popular on linux because the drivers are not what most users would like to be

that video card should run perfectly 1080p videos at 1080p resolution

be sure to install the right drivers for it form synaptic

one question, do you have the right psu to connect that video card? if i remember correctly that model could need extra power form the psu

Yes, I have the right power supply to use the card. The directions say to use a 450 watt or higher power supply with the 6 pin molex connector. I have a 600 wat Thermaltake TR2 600 watt power supply and it has the 6 pin connector that the card requires. I am using an HP 25" HDMI monitor with a resolution of 1920x1080. I made a backup yesterday of my installed system and if the card will work I was just going to install it and load the remaster to set up the drivers. I figure I could have the system back up and running in about 10 minutes if the card will work with the newer xserver packages.

that monitor is perfect for that card, full 1080p resolution, maybe more?

the psu is also the right one for this case  Smiley

Hi exploder;

If it's anything like my 5670, it'll be a good, fast card.

The 5670 doesn't even use an ext. power connector as it only uses
70 watts max, which the pcie slot can handle.

The HD 5750 seems to work fine. It is using the open source drivers and desktop effects are working nicely! I did some trading to get the power supply, the graphics card was free and it was a hassle re-arranging everything in the computer case but it seems to have been worth all the trouble. I appreciate all of the help!  Grin This the computer I use everyday and the one I use to show people how nice PCLinuxOS is and the on-board NVidea graphics was kind of weak. Now the computer should be in pretty good shape for a while.  Grin

Edit: Just tried full screen flash and it works good too!

if system feels ok this way, avoid using the proprietary drivers, if you feel lucky try the mentioned drivers on synaptic

John Bee, are you using an HDMI cable with you ATI card? I have a HDMI to VGA adapter on my card right now but I have an HDMI cable out in the garage somewhere. I was thinking about changing the cable out if plymouth will still display right using the HDMI cable.

No I don't. Hmmm, I don't even know if this one has an HDMI output. Let me check........

I have a VGA, DVI, and a display port. (Although I'd have to pull the 'puter out to see for sure bout the display port).

I had to connect my VGA Lcd to the DVI port via the vga-to-dvi adapter because my lcd cable plug
is too wide to fit the vga socket on the back of the card. (They positioned the vga port right at the top
of the bracket, which left little room on that side of the port for the wide plug from the monitor.)

Edit: Oh and I do use the binary drivers, because the open source drivers are not powersaver aware, so your
card is running full out all the time, instead of ramping up only when needed.

My 5670 runs at 150mhz/300mhz (GPU/MEM) at idle, and when necessary run full out at 775mhz/4ghz.

Thanks for the reply! I will have to look around the garage and find the cable and give it a try. I would like to loose the adapter if I can but it works just fine for now.  Grin
