I used to suffer from migraines. So I gave up MS.

I installed XP on the first partition (40gb)

Used the rest for PCLOS.  This is the first time I've not had GRUB work on boot as the system goes directly to XP, which is good in a sense as I need XP for work (sadly), but I can't get into PCLOS without a LiveCD.  I have tried to fix the MBR via Redo MBR on the live CD twice.

Any suggestions?

I can't remember if Redo MBR asks you where to put the record. If it does overwrite Windows bootloader putting it on sda if this is where Windows is installed.

Otherwise you can follow this:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,62786.msg508062.html#msg508062

But you better first post the output of fdisk -l command run in Terminal with root privileges. This will show all your partitions.

From the liveCD can you show us /boot/grub/menu.lst of the installed system? And fdisk -l ?

If there are issues with grub, it is nice to have a tool like

http://www.supergrubdisk.org/

that at hand.

Ok so I'm a twit.

I've never had the installer choose to put the GRUB anywhere other than the boot device, I didn't think for a second it would be on sda5. (the partition I defined as root)

So in rerunning the installer I put the GRUB in the location I actually wanted.

It's all good now.  As I said d'oh!
