My brother Jim, frustrated by the last Windows virus that hit his EEE PC, had his son Mike wipe the hard drive and re-install. He also asked to have PCLinuxOS installed. He's seen me using my Notebook at the office and figured it was time to step up.
Anyhow, Mike instaled as a dual boot. he gave it to me to update. Do I have to update synaptic first? I recall having to do that a few weeks ago. also, I'm assuming that repos need tobe updated, as well? I'm pointing him to heanet (default)
Also, would it bea good idea to install XFCE, as well? I figure two lightweight DEs might make life easier if something happens. Besides, he can choose which one he prefers.
BTW, LXDE looks wonderful on this EEE PC! I want one!:)
EDIT -- I was referring to the aptupgrade. Hmmm.. I thougth I diditon my desktop already. Looks like it is not installed. Maybe I did it on my notebook only?Isthereanotherwayto tel?
Anyhow, i guess I should do this update before any other on my brother's netbook?
George,
I would stick to one desktop as long as it is working well for him. When he has learned where everything is and gets comfortable, he could install task-xfce.
aptupgrade was a one time deal to get from the older isos to the new rpm system. If you are starting from any of the 2011 isos, you do not need it. Of course, you always need to 'Reload -> Mark all upgrades -> Apply' in Synaptic.
