I am using the live CD PClinux on an ancient PC so I can give you the minimum requirements  Smiley Now, I know that the card can do 3d/compiz on other distros (elive and so on) because it is an nVidia 6200 with dual out which I have used.

How come the boot does not detect the card properly and does not even show 'Configure 3D'? It only shows configure video, and even prompts me to load the proprietary driver if I wish. When I click yes, and I return to the control panel (or w/e you call it to configure the system) there is still no 'Configure 3D'.

Does anyone know what the detection does, under the covers, so that I can somehow make it see the card as 3D capable? Is there a boot parameter (I tried using vga=791) that I should use?

(BTW I noticed that the control panel is based on Mandriva iirc, and I remember Mandriva back then only provided me that '3D' option with my ati card, but it 'played dumb' when I upgraded to a better nvidia card)

Because there is no compiz on the LiveCD anymore. KDE4 has its own desktop effects which are activated from Configure your Desktop.

The KDE KWin effects are very good and do a great many things that Compiz does, and quite often using less resources.

If you still want to use Compiz, open Synaptic and look for, and install, task-3ddesktop

If you can keep you head while all around you are losing theirs, then you have misunderstood the situation.
