soaring high = no Windows here :-D

« on: July 11, 2011, 05:51:15 AM »

Hi all,

I have installed PCLOS 2011.6 LXDE in Virtualbox on XP at work.

Problem is, I can't figure out how to set up the system so Synaptic can get the updates and new software.

- I can surf the web with the connection settings correctly entered in Firefox

- I have changed the network settings in Synaptic, but to no avail

- I couldn't set up the proxy in PCC as squid isn't installed (and - of course - cannot be downloaded).

Any guidance or suggestions will be very much appreciated.

TIA

what changes did you make to firefox to make it work?

what changes did you make to synaptic to make it work?

are you going online using a proxy server or something?

The more info you give, the easier it gets to help you

Not applicable with PCLOS 2011.6 LXDE... already done before the remaster was made and released.

Hi muungwana and Old-Polack,

thanks for jumping in here.

what changes did you make to firefox to make it work?

what changes did you make to synaptic to make it work?

are you going online using a proxy server or something?

The more info you give, the easier it gets to help you

In Firefox I entered the correct settings under "manual proxy configuration" in "Connection Settings" and set "no proxy for: localhost, 127.0.0.1, 192.168.30.*"

When opening Firefox, I'm prompted for a username and password to go online.

In Synaptic, under Preferences > Network I entered the same settings, but when reloading I get errors:

Quote
Could not download all repository indexes

The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.

Code:
apt-get update

from a terminal doesn't get anything either also I have not waited for it to time-out.

I have no idea how to proceed from here.

Any thoughts?

TIA

you are prompted for a username and password when using firefox before you can go online.

I think synaptic is prompted for the same info and is not giving it and that is why it is blocked.

The solution could be setting up a system wide proxy configuration that will take all network traffic through it including synaptic's. I am not aware of any tool that can do that i suspect atleast one exist.
