I've been running PCLOS 2009 since it was 2007. So I'm trying to put up 2011.04 on a new box, but X won't start and the live cd boots to the shell. I login as root and try startx and get a bunch of errors.
I'm trying to use the integrated graphic controller (Intel) and a PCI nvidia MX4000, for a multi-monitor configuration. When I yank the MX4000, the live cd does the x thing. Any ideas why the live cd doesn't start x with two display controllers? Is there a way around this?
thnx

I searched through that thread and didn't find anything specific to my problem. I did find somewhere else that nvidia 96.xxx drivers no longer work and nvidia's website says that's the driver needed for the MX4000. So looks like I've got a show stopper here unless anyone has an idea for a work-around. thanks.

Try the nv driver. Or try the nouveau driver or the vesa driver.

When x doesn't start, you will be at a console login screen (xdm). Login and type the command startx. If x doesn't start, you will be led through a diver set up. You'll need to be logged in as root to do that.

After startx I don't get opportunity to install drivers. It errors out with message:
failed to allocate/map the primary surface

I replaced the nVidia MX4000 with an ATI Rage 128Pro. They're about the same vintage/capability. PCLOS live CD started just fine and I was able to install 2011.04. I'm running the update now from the repos and it should finish in a while. I won't be trying the MX4000 again, and am pretty confident the newer PCLOS don't work with it.
thanks for your replies
